One of the arguments for "intelligent design" takes as an example a simple banana, and explains how it's just the right size for eating, the right color to easily spot it, easy to peel with human hands, etc. — and that it all can't be just a coincidence. Someone could point out that we evolved the eyes and hands for the banana, and not the other way around. But that would be a mistake. I will instead point out that the modern banana was indeed designed by humans. Behold the wild one (a banana for scale).
I liked the fact that it was very organic and spontaneous in other words totally unorganized and it still worked. But not the kind of demo to make a big splash. I’ve heard people say that the Swiss opted to make the big demo next week because elections are coming up.
There are not many people, here! 🥺 Maybe 120? 150? And more than half of them speak English. Which supports my theory that the Swiss failed 100% at organizing. Also, zero students as far as I can tell. And as far as I can tell, no WWF, Pro Natura, Greenpeace, or anybody else.
Canberra, Australia's capital, is to switch to 100% renewable energy in 2020.
"From 1 January 2020, Canberra will join seven other districts around the world that produces or purchase the equivalent of their total electricity consumption from renewable sources, according to a report released on 18 September by policy think tank the Australia Institute in Canberra."
Trying to read Wikipedia posts on pentatonic scales, heptatonic scales, with half remembered music theory from primary school swirling through my head… I think I need to find a book or something.
@brennen at work we all develop on our own machines, client and server running within eclipse; there is only one database instance for all of us on the network but we all have our own set of users so it’s easy to replace and to check out other people’s state. This means we can’t work offline because we are lazy and just use a VPN to get db access while out of the office.
Wow I just found out that color printers add coded dots onto every page you print so that it can be traced back to where and when it was printed. Umm.... did anyone else know about this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_Identification_Code
They did MusicLab but instead of songs, they asked *lightly* political questions (“should companies be taxed where they’re headquartered”, “should bitcoin be banned” etc.). In the worlds where participants could see previous votes, Repubs vs Democrats flip flopped!
@22 fascinating! I am reminded of research done in Switzerland when I was young regarding young people joining political parties. It essentially argued that no matter how neutral you were on joining within a short time you turn into a loyal party line toting drone because you assimilated the positions of those around you. I’m guessing the same dynamics that lead rival siblings to differentiate from each other by accentuating even the tiniest differences. And years later they are very different.
I'm working on a new project to add "groups" functionality to the #fediverse. It will work entirely via federation protocols, so you'll keep using your existing #Mastodon or other #ActivityPub app account and join groups by following them.
