yeah, i put an anti-glare screen protector on a while back. i think it should be fine to remove, but i'll warn that it's on there 'cause the glossy screen has quite a bit of glare without, so you might want to find a replacement.

@lordbowlich damn. we're still green and smoke free in colorado, at least in the northern front range, but reports are starting to trickle in from elsewhere. i was really hoping this year would be something of a reprieve for more of the region...

@solderpunk @kensanata i think if anything this is insufficiently cynical. it's not just about planned obsolescence, ecosystem lockin, and add-ons, though those are certainly all important benefits. at heart it's about elevated control and closing the analog loophole.

they were always around in the summers in NE when i was a kid, but then i looked at pictures and wasn't sure if my memories were playing tricks on me, but i think i didn't have the right species. sure seems right, given that they almost never held still long enough for me to get a good fix on one...

@victoria i miss the waffle house - i used to live just on the edge of the IHOP / WH boundary, and venture south and east often enough to have a lot of good WH experiences. we have a little outcropping of them in colorado, but the ones i've been in have been... rough.

@gamehawk i am equally surprised, but i haven't worked for a hardware company since early this year and am apparently way out of the loop.

@polymerwitch it's a fair question, but i'm not entirely sure i'm ready to grant the premise. the collective imagination seems utterly saturated with dystopia to the point of cliche in a way that it hasn't since i was a little kid in the cold war era growing up with the background assumption that we stood a fair chance of being annihilated in a nuclear cataclysm at any given moment.

to put it another way, maybe flat namespaces and unmediated echo-prone broadcast publication are useful in the small and tend towards pathology above a certain scale.

it's not hard to articulate why this is: even by way of very well-intentioned people who have interesting things to say, twitter leaking into the stream is almost invariably a vector for grar, bad vibes, interpersonal sniping, dunking, the policing of the eternal correctness ratchet, hyper-manipulative outrage-tuned political news, the howling static of contemporary ideological conflict protocols, click-mongering, celebrity.

basically everything i am here to avoid.

without replying to anyone in particular, i observe that while i don't want to prescribe behavior around this, i insta-mute almost every account i come across that's obviously cross-posting from twitter. and this has so reliably improved the local signal for me that i'd probably check an "ignore all traffic except for direct messages / replies from accounts which automatically cross-post" button.

it's hard because there's a whole bunch of unnecessary/pathological gatekeeping, but gatekeeping (or an editorial function, if you prefer) is itself pretty much essential to the thing working at all.

at any rate, i mostly don't edit wikipedia these days because after working on software all day long i don't have energy for all the procedure jockeying. (this was also true before i worked on wikipedia for a living, but it's funnier now.)

@selontheweb which is to say i feel like the style and methods of a limbaugh or a savage or any of a thousand less well-distributed villains can't easily be bent to positive uses, because they are themselves inherently destructive and intellectually debilitating.

@selontheweb you're not wrong about the success right-wing radio has had. it's a huge factor in how we got the current situation, and continues to be stunningly influential. fascism is getting astonishing bang for its buck out of the effort.

that said, i live in a radio market that has an effort at left-wing talk radio, and it functions mostly as a demonstration that mimicking those tactics and aesthetics with a theoretically inverted ideology leads nowhere very pleasant.

@kukkurovaca to be fair, at this date editing wikipedia in any significant way is a remarkably similar experience to making changes to open source software.

(for good and ill in terms of both things, i think.)
