The other day I wanted to share a video.

YouTube wanted me to login, give them my real name, provide an email address (wouldn't take a throwaway for an answer) and a phone number to text me (I don't have a phone).

I went to a #Peertube instance instead. They accepted my throwaway email address and my video. Didn't ask for personal information. And the upload and video playback worked great.

    True story.

So, thank you @Chocobozzz and everyone else who worked on Peertube.

@valerauko @galaxis I'm running my instance on a $20 host, along with a bunch of other stuff. Biggest issue so far is disk space. But this is a tiny instance, me & a few friends & bots. Mind you, most space is occupied by remote media, so I'm aggressively deleting media older than 3 days.

Just free'd up ~5Gb of space in over a hundred unused, obsolete packages.

Why do I install random crap all the time? *sigh*

Looks like I haven't removed cached remote media in a while. ~30Gb freed up already, and still going strong.

"10 things you didn't know about #keyboard #firmware" or "10 things everyone misunderstands about keyboard firmware".

I'd be hard pressed to keep it down to 10 things... would be an educational blog post, though. Perhaps I should write it.

Dear web x.0 (I lost count) websites,

the fact that you geolocated my IP address as registered in a certain country does not mean that I speak that country's language. I have configured my browser to send to you the list of languages I speak (in order of preference) in every fucking request, so kindly please use that.

    Sincerely, yours,

Does anyone here have an #Atreus with either a pre-2016 PCB with an A* MCU, or the legacy Teensy2 variant? Someone who'd be up for testing a #Kaleidoscope firmware port on it?

(I'm not 100% done with the port yet, need to wire up a few things to make the variant selectable, but that'll be done in a few hours.)

Mr. 15 months old stood in his small bed, leaning on its frame (about 75cm high). Then he pulled himself up, and almost managed to pull himself out completely.

This was genuinely scary to watch.

@liw I can only recommend keyboards with open source firmware... Wait, actually... I can also advise against them! It's another endless rabbit hole that sucks you in, and you keep tweaking and tweaking your firmware.

    Flee while you can!

    @liw Yeah... :/

Very similar indeed. Just like in the home router/wifi AP case, many of these firmwares will become abandoned in just a few years, with all their bugs and all.

Granted, to be able to port an existing firmware to your hardware, you need to have a rough understanding of how to do that. That's a bit of investment one has to make initially, while when writing your own, you can just start hacking on day one.

But by going on your own, you'll end up in the same traps as everyone else. You'll pay a much higher price later (and not much later, not later enough to be able to ignore it).

I'm looking at another #keyboard interest check saying it's using open source #firmware. Why do I have the sinking feeling it's yet another custom one?

There are cases where developing keyboard firmware from scratch makes sense. But those cases are rare. There's a reasonable variety already: TMK, QMK, KLL, Kaleidoscope. Why not work with them? You'd get a lot of good stuff for free.

Watching a movie (Kill the Irishman), there's a scene showing a court. The first thing I notice? The court reporter using a #steno machine.
