I wrote a thing about why I believe the best and most useful decentralized applications are going to be the ones that utilize multiple protocols. I imagine a world where ActivityPub, Dat, and Secure ScuttleButt are all seen as tools in a toolbox rather than as ecosystems, and what kind of amazing software we could build with them outside of the central/corporate paradigm.

@allan so in the end, all your "colourful" language is directly aligned with the goal of "saying what you mean". You don't want to be misunderstood, and you have the capacity to avoid it using the correct words.

@allan I feel like as you continuously grow, read, and communicate in the world you find the "say what you mean" actually requires the use of specific words to convey precisely how you feel. The nuance of language becomes more apparent the more miscommunications come about in your life.

@sconlan most common practice is indeed to transmit passwords in clear text over https to the server.

then someone enables debug logging on incoming traffic behind the LB after its back in plain text.

@allan @keithzg thats not a bad thought, build klout by issuing $1 purchases on the card and seeing if they get dumped. then once you have 3-4 months of purchases with no chargebacks, the cards are worth more on a market somewhere

at the very least, these cards can't be used on any Stripe powered site again and the card owners should get a little piece of mind.

Had to take down the donation site for mastodon, just got about $100 of fake donations from obviously stolen cards.

Why even start attacking a free site looking for donations to help support it? Just wasting everyone's time, its not like i'm into accepting stolen cards.

This is how static-site blogging generally works. You have a directory of text files and images on your laptop, you push a button, and BAM your website is updated.

Compare to Wordpress, where I log into my remote site and edit posts. If I want to get those posts onto my laptop, I have to take special action, repeatedlyβ€”even though I *composed* the posts while sitting at my laptop! Bonkers.

(Let's make social media work more like that first case, 'k?)

OpenNIC: the unsung hero of the future?

So I’m ashamed to say that I’ve basically been ignorant of the fact that there’s been an alternate democratic/open/post-Capitalist domain name system operating since 2000. It’s called OpenNIC (https://www.opennic.org/) and – with a bit of design love and creative marketing – I don’t see why we couldn't get widespread support for it. It would be a huge step forward for decentralisation/individual sovereignty. https://mastodon.ar.al/media/upXlzzLil5JHFbxONJQ
