@aladar I loved DOOM 2016 so much that I even bought the PS4 version after buying the PC version.

@aladar Well, as I said, it's just a concern of the potential for companies to just go this route instead. Personally, there are enough decent FOSS games for me to play and enjoy that I've not had the desire to get a closed source game except for my PS4 Pro. DOOM was the only exception so far.

@aladar It was just something I've noticed in the past 10 years. Some devs went on to make native Linux versions (not including companies that ported those games over like Loki). Proton was meant to make existing games accessible, but there was always the concern that it would be the path of least resistance for game development; "Just make sure it works in Proton."

@aladar Those saying they'll pirate a game that doesn't even work on Linux would pirate it anyway if it was available, even natively, on Linux. I paid for DOOM and I can only run it via Proton/WINE. Said game doesn't run on Linux? Oh well, I just won't buy it. No skin off my back.

@aladar Again, I'm with you when it comes to trolls bitching about anything even when a company tries. Granted, constructive criticism is something a gamedev should take when its given for future releases, but not abuse. That said, companies shouldn't punish those users who support them even just for having the game function in Proton/WINE. That's just wrong.

@aladar I have, and honestly, I've seen more vitriol on Twitter in comparison. Regarding those trolls who shit on devs even after they've tried, I've seen comments from Linux gamers on the GamingOnLinux site and even in reddit complaining about those trolls. There was one dev (don't remember the name) that said, "fuck it" because of the abuse, and all who commented were pissed because of the trolls.

Number two, people like that are going to shit on anyone no matter what. I call them trolls, regardless of the platform. I'm sure there are other Linux users that bitch at those users for making things worse for everyone. If a company doesn't have the resources, I understand and others do as well...

@aladar Hell, I don't even have to give the company shit. I just take my money elsewhere in the future. And I make sure to spread the word about how shitty $gamedev is for doing such a thing. The Linux community may be small, but they are quite supportive of those who don't punish them even if just using Proton/WINE.

@aladar Not all Linux gamers are like that. The fact that you're blanketing like that is just as bad as what Bungie is doing IMO. I paid for DOOM 2016 on Steam once I knew that it would work via Proton. My only gripe is that I need to upgrade my video card but that's on me, not Bethesda/id. However, if you're banning me because I'm using WINE or Proton to play your Windows game that I paid for, hell yeah I'm going to shit on you.

@aladar Bungie is worse in that they are actively banning Proton/WINE users who are trying to make the game work. I get that it's because of the anti-cheat, but as mentioned in the reddit thread, Windows users just get booted off the servers, not banned outright.

@aladar Well, that's the thing. Now that Valve has made this available, anyone wanting to support Linux would just take this route as an easy solution as opposed to making the game native. I've just seen this trend lately, and others seem to be noticing the same thing. I'm not knocking Proton since it's meant to make Windows games compatible, but I'm knocking those that use this as an easy way out...

@aladar Well, it seems as though game devs are fine with just making sure it works in Proton and nothing more. I get why ($$$ and time), but lately it seems like they're using it as an excuse, and Linux users are accepting it.
