Inedo was recently trying to figure out what forum software to use. Marketing settled on Discourse based on what other similar companies are using. Then I pointed out to my boss that the Discopocalypse thread is still running.

I copied a screenshot of Jeff Atwood being an asshole to the internal chat program. My boss recognized that that matched his experience with Jeff 3 years earlier but wondered if Jeff had improved since then.

And then we found out that the post was from 3 days ago.

Needless to say, Inedo didn't even get to the prototype stage for the Discourse forum.

we live in a world where the two following things are true at the same time:

- the current industry standard way to find out if someone is a human or a machine is to see if they know what a stop sign is

- self-driving cars exist

Nobody here wants to be dead. Nobody here wants anyone else to be dead.

Sometimes, when someone gets overwhelmed by strong emotions or their body's needs haven't been met, they'll post that they want to be dead.

And I'm going to tell you something that you might not expect me to say: Please continue doing that.

If you post your bad feelings, your friends get a chance to comfort you. We can help you work through your problems.

If you stay silent, you will only hear more silence. Nobody can help you if nobody knows you need help.

If nothing else, posting and reading the responses allows you to stall for time for your brain to get unstuck.

We really need to stop the "anyone who ever disagrees with me in any way is dead to me forever" culture.

We also need to stop dealing in absolutes. As we saw today, the "all corporations are inherently evil" thing caused a bunch of instance admins to suspend an instance that changed hands to an existing, trusted Fediverse admin. No money changed hands.

The only remotely unusual thing about this changeover was that they published a press release. What our reaction as a community is saying to future administrative decisions is that transparency is something we do not want. And that's not a thing we should be saying.
