Just ducked out of a lunch discussion where people were talking about their strategies for unfollowing anyone that talks about politics or things that they disagree with.
I mean, you're free to do whatever you want, but I kind of feel a little disgusted at so many tech workers just burying their heads in the sand when it comes to politics. It's like you want to go out of your way to avoid anything that might make you slightly uncomfortable.

#Fractal is a new #Matrix app for the Gnome desktop: https://blogs.gnome.org/tbernard/2018/04/18/fractal-hackfest-2018/
Honestly, it looks pretty sweet!

I really wonder what it would take to get #diaspora to start working on #ActivityPub support.
Bridging it into the fediverse would be fundamentally huge.

"The worst thing I see (and this is really really bad) is that if Eugen/Gargron sends a restricted post to his 74000 followers and you decide to reply to it, your server is going to have to fetch the actor record for every one of those 74000 followers to find their inbox address and then send out 74000 copies of your reply.
On our side of the federation, if you want to have 74000 followers, it's only you who needs to pony up the resources to support that..."

Guy: I'm having a problem with using your product!
Me: No problem happy to help! What's the problem?
Guy: Well, I'm using some third-party plugin that isn't officially supported by your company at all.
Me: Okay, why are you using this thing and not the official one?
Guy: Because your documentation sucks and this other thing just works.
Me: Oh, shoot. Could you tell us what exactly our documentation is lacking?
Guy: I hate that you keep asking questions, I'm trying a different product now.

Is anyone hosting a #PeerTube instance that contains only #CreativeCommons or #PublicDomain works?
I've been semi-serious thinking about committing to this. Free Culture, to me, seems to align with Free Software, and using products of the commons for the sake of preserving and distributing them feels worthwhile.
It'd be interesting to make such works available through federation, and maybe even store it in IPFS.

Hey, I'm writing an article about the #fediverse; could people respond to this toot with their opinions?
https://social.nasqueron.org/@deadsuperhero/99804544501755694
Hoping to feature the conversation thread in the article. Basically I just want to know what the fediverse means to different people, and what the overall community seems like.

My new article about #Funkwhale is out! It's basically like a federated Grooveshark or Soundcloud. The main dev is working on bringing #ActivityPub to it.

The EU has some terrible ideas about publishing that could hurt #CreativeCommons

I guess one thing I'm curious about is what arguments would be valid in making a case for #decentralization?
The ones I can think of are virtues of self-sufficency, resistance to censorship, agency for data ownership, ad-hoc communication between many peers, connecting together many spaces on the web, controlling who can see certain things that you post, and ability to examine/modify/share the code your data is hosted on.
If anyone has other arguments, I'd love to hear them! 😀

@sireebob Part of his method for getting popular also came from running paranoid Facebook pages like "Exposing the Truth", accumulating a critical mass of followers, and hosting all of his content on Minds. So naturally, that audience ended up following him.

@sireebob I have a long history of talking to the founder during my Diaspora days, and he always came across as a huckster. He's the sort of guy that sets up news bots and makes up that they're the official network of Anonymous to get traffic. The whole network consists of tinfoil-hat alternative culture of the Alex Jones variety.
He talked to me a lot about federation, and I gave him a decent amount of advice, but no word on whether the platform actually federates at all.

RT @aantonop@twitter.com: The CLOUD Act passed. It destroys privacy globally, so it had to be snuck into the $1.3 trillion omnibus without debate.
Encrypt. Encrypt. Encrypt. Go Dark.
When privacy is criminalized, only criminals have privacy. We got sold out, again.
