@Nezchan Though I have jumped back and forth between environments, I generally have generally stuck with a GNU/Linux environment since I was about 13/14 years old.
Personally, I love it. It's not a perfect system, but generally I can make good sense of how everything works, and I get fairly uncomfortable with other systems that don't provide things like package management, virtual hosting environments, and a desktop environment that isn't pure ass.

The depressing thing about Medium lies in the sheer amount of shitty opinion pieces that make it to the front page.
Almost everything reads like tips for marketers and people in social media. Many of the writers act as if their truths are the canonical truth, and are fine with dictating how the reader should think and feel about any given subject.
Occasionally, there are gems, but it feels like the front page is getting worse?

I wonder when skeumorphism will see a new Renaissance? Will we get tired of ultra-flat everything and crave pseudo-realistic elements again?

@mono I don't even understand the symbolism behind the Lego sculptures here. It just looks like a brainfart.
HOW IS THIS INTERSECTIONAL?!

The Diaspora federation:
-I don't know how the hell we initially defined this standard, our docs were terrible forever and someone just reverse-engineered everything themselves.
-Numerous implementations in Python, Ruby, and PHP
-After an amazing refactor, main federation calls of the platform abstracted into a reusable gem.
-Features are pretty much 1:1 between instances
-Added bonus that every status is able to properly reflect a corresponding thread of comments -

@chosafine This sounds like an experience that would force newcomers to give up after like two posts.

The OStatus federation:
- Only half-defined standard
- One big implementation only
- Features are added ad-hoc, whatever GNU Social wants becomes the standard later
- To be compatible, you gotta do everything exactly like GNU Social, reading the standard documents isn't enough.
The ActivityPub federation:
- Only half-defined standard
- One big implementation only
- Features are added ad-hoc, whatever Mastodon wants becomes the standard later
- To be compatible, you gotta do everything exactly like Mastodon, reading the standard documents isn't enough. -

@friedger In hindsight, it looks like you're actually asking a different kind of question entirely.
Yes, Mastodon toots have OpenGraph properties which render in Slack automatically.

@friedger Also, not to leave Pleroma out:
yourdomain.tld/users/username
and postActiv (a fork of GNU Social) uses the same URL convention as GNU Social itself.

@friedger One way may be to observe what link a profile is coming from. This will require you to click through/hover on Mastodon's profile column on the far-right to see the origin site.
Each federated network seems to stick to a specific URL schema, but they all use the username@yourdomain.tld convention for webfinger lookups.
Mastodon: yourdomain.tld/@username
GNU Social: yourdomain.tld/username
Hubzilla: yourdomain.tld/channel/username
Friendica: yourdomain.tld/profile/username
