@snaums
not quite the same but arixv?
"On 10 April, astrophysicists announced that they had captured the 1st ever image of a #blackhole.
No headlines mentioned that the image would have been impossible without open-source software: #Matplotlib, a #Python library for graphing data.
Just 5 days later, the NSF rejected a grant to support that ecosystem, saying that the software lacked sufficient impact.
#opensource is widely acknowledged as crucially important in science, yet it is funded non-sustainably."
@falkreon
open source is a necessary but insufficient condition to being "free" in the modern sense, and is one of many aspects you mention, i totally agree!
"OSS does not appreciate leftism"
FOSSbros detected
I *do* think we need to pivot from
libertarian, meritocratic, free as in "if you knew the twelve Frameworks this was written in you could just modify it yourself"
to
accessible, affirming, free as in "this is in one language, runs on a pi, and has plugins and config keys to lower the barriers to entry"
radical enabling shit. So open-source purity tests just don't feel compelling to me.
@RAOF
Ahhhh!! that clarifies it a bunch! now i understand, and totally agree. that's why it's so strange to me, its self contradictory!!
@ryen
@remotenemesis
hahaha trust i have no problem asking them either 😎
by nature of the question one has to admit to not knowing, but by asking one shows desire to know
@RAOF
hmm i think im getting confused by our usage of "it"
being able to state things as true without having empirical evidence is certainly possible, but you may not be able to predict these events if there's no empirical evidence
is that a fair stating of your position? because if so i agree with that
the perspective "lens" required is a belief in science, but exclusively holding onto this perspective in all cases seems like a strange thing to do to me?
@RAOF
hmmm, i think my friend is stating the opposite position, that only when a thing can be verified emperically can its utility be evaluated
but i think thats still absurd. there are things we know to be fact that cannot be proven to be true
@ryen
thanks!
@remotenemesis

@remotenemesis
this may reveal my noob level but: DVWA?
@ghost
i feel like to them there's really no difference between paranoia and conspiracies
today in unreasonable and absurd things a libertarian said to me: "it's better to start at ground zero and detach yourself from history because is flawed and unemperical and hence cannot be validated or rationale to learn from"
🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
as though some how it's possible to divorce yourself from your history
I'm so tired of my friends coming out as libertarian and holding absurd value systems
@oneiric_acid
@Torie
take your time and only if you find the spoons and want to share 🙂
@freakazoid
I tried
some people don't want to listen to reason and data apparently? they seemed to agree with me by the time we ended talking
when you find an individual instance that hasnt been federated with yet 😊
when your "friends" accuse you of being a conspiracy theorist for saying "the business model of most major tech companies is selling user data and ads" 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
i guess not everyone is as informed as i am?? im not even sure how to respond to this?
@rafial
BURN DOWN IP LAW
Headline says: "MICROSOFT'S EBOOK APOCALYPSE SHOWS THE DARK SIDE OF DRM"
The real truth is: THERE IS NO BRIGHT SIDE
