i remember reading here somewhere that Google is in extinguish phase (on a few projects), but I'm not quite sure that's what their strategy is.
it's more like "control" imo
they've already pulled it off on android, it's almost impossible to use without play services and totally owned by them (im running a GApps-less phone, but its not for everyone and is a huge risk even then)
it's happening with chromium/gmail rn, with the ban of addons, locking of api, proprietary additions to open protocols, walling it off entirely from everyone but themselves
up next is kubernetes and go; i can tell you now it's not going to be pretty
their strategy is: "embrace open core first, exclusive control later" on a surprisingly high number of projects they don't can
just another morally bankrupt tech firm co-opting open source for their own gain. they're just as bad as (amazon is)/(Microsoft was) but better at managing their perception among developers.
Also, listen to people of color. Sorry to offend, but no matter how well informed you think you are on the subject of racism, _they know better._
Listen to women about sexism.
Listen to trans folk about transphobia.
Listen to disabled folk about ableism.
Listen to gay folk. Listen to otherkin. Listen to the poor. Listen to everyone who's marginalized. Listen even if you're in one of these groups yourself!
That's all it takes: don't assume you know better than them.
Doing nothing because you're afraid of starting down a slippery slope, or of having to take responsibility for a decision that has consequences, is just cowardice. If it's within your power and ability to make a difference, then be brave and do it. The world's not going to end because your project takes a stand against bigotry.
There is literally no valid reason to leave bigotry to happen. "Free speech"? You're not the government. "Slippery slope, who gets to decide what's harmful, where does it stop"? How about we take a single damn step towards making things better for marginalized people before worrying about going too far? We're as far from "too far" as possible right now. How about we maybe try something and if it causes a problem we reevaluate?

Reminded that the Microsoft ebook store closes next week. The DRM'd books will stop working.
I cannot believe that sentence.
"The books will stop working."
I keep saying it and it sounds worse each time.
lately whenever i find myself considering tooting or tweeting about politics or something, i just end up deleting whatever i wrote instead, and tbh i think i feel better for it
@sourcookie @GinnyMcQueen @Are0h @denikombucha @ArtistMarciaX
@jalcine
all have links in their bios to pay them for the work they do for the fedi, and just being generally awesome here as well :)
@shonalika 😆 I shoulda known 😅
@lordbowlich hmm is it? maybe youre right; im new to the industry and it seems like it's a sellers market for devs there. smaller cities, by virtue of being smaller; have fewer opportunities (esp for junior devs) which are less interesting and pay less (on average).
I want to gain experience so I can help more radical ideas and im wondering whether it makes sense to "level up" in SV first or find somewhere that agrees with my politics.
@shonalika "don't see the point of handcuffs, I am totally capable of just staying still"
wtf the indieweb.org ssl cert expired??
