With little debate and the support of the main opposition party, Australia has passed a law that will subvert Internet security and demolish user trust. What happens now? https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/12/new-fight-online-privacy-and-security-australia-falls-what-happens-next

In the New Fight for Online Privacy and Security, Australia Falls: What Happens Next?
      from Electronic Frontier Foundation
With indecent speed, and after the barest nod to debate, the Australian Parliament has now passed the Assistance and Access Act, unopposed and unamended. The bill is a cousin to the United Kingdom’s Investigatory Powers Act, passed in 2016. The two laws vary in their details, but both now deliver a...

@thegibson it wont matter if the applications are back door'd. im doubtful Signal will comply, but i wouldn't be surprised if WhatsApp et all does. Will be interesting to see Telegram/Wire and Google/Apple's response (as service providers and Store owners respectively)
I cant even imagine what they plan on doing about GPG encrypted email.

I hope Apple pulls out of Australia for being unable to comply, because that seems like the only hope we have for the government to reconsider.

@remotenemesis i think ethical web design should be about people, not technology standards. as you say, the problem is social, not technological. whether we use rss, indieWeb or activityPub itself should not be the final concern, instead what matters is they are open and interoperable.

this manifesto is the best i know of, and is a great starting point, but lots of the details are vague at best. forming a community around it is a good idea.

@zpojqwfejwfhiunz indeed all of these contribute to the device's excellence haha.
OxygenOS is fine, but my issue was also with Google play services. I found LineageOS supports both camera and fingerprint, though image quality is lower now for me. The largest personal sacrifice I had to make to get rid of GPS was face unlock which seems to depend on it and was rather convenient, but now i have adapted to mostly using the fingerprint reader.
