@wistahe Basically, functions are synchronous single return, generators are synchronous multiple return, promises are asynchronous single return and observables are asynchronous multiple return.

@wistahe First thoughts I get after reading that:

    1. This reminds me of another set of quadrants:

@wistahe Yes. Definitely. Among other things, he lays down a good definition of play vs work. It's also an amusing and entertaining talk. Ignore the "management" part of the title; when he mentions management, it's only to mock it:

@wistahe You're talking about play. Have you seen John Cleese's talk about creativity?

@wistahe I don't come across people who think that way very often. The usual response I get to that sentiment is that I should somehow think of it differently.

@philcolbourn There are dialects in Sweden and Denmark too, but they're not as thick as some Norwegian dialects.

@philcolbourn Norwegian speakers tend to understand Swedish and Danish better than vice versa, but that might be more due to native Norwegian speakers' exposure to a wide variety of local dialects (accents) than the language itself.

@philcolbourn If you're going to pick among Scandinavian languages, Swedish is spoken by more people and has one less gender to worry about. The languages of Scandinavia are mostly mutually intelligible, except everyone has trouble with Danish, unless spoken slowly.

@wistahe Making people smile or otherwise satisfying them is a worthy goal, but the kind of thing I like to put my energy into rarely seems to pique the interest of other people. I build it, but they don't come.

@philcolbourn It helps that English started out as a Germanic language, and retains a Germanic word order very similar to the Scandinavian languages even today. There are even phrases and figures of speech that translate word by word. English speakers who move to Norway don't seem to have a lot of trouble picking up Norwegian either, even if they never seem to get a hang of the sounds.

@philcolbourn It would be more enviable if my mother tongue was something more widely spoken, such as German. In adulthood, I haven't been a good learner of languages. I've expressed interest in other languages, but it's too much work to learn them. English snuck in because it's mandatory to learn in school, and you kind of have to know it to work in IT, plus you're exposed to it thorough popular culture, and also, Scandinavians just tend to be good at it.

@philcolbourn What you have to understand about English is that it's very fond of verbing nouns, and that not all languages are like that.

Being an adult human with no life goals is a bit like being a hostage to your instincts. You're doing all this work just to stay alive, but you don't know why this is important.

@philcolbourn English is my second language, but I use it so much that I switch to it without thinking about it. Feels more like my 1ΒΌth language than my second.

For some reason, I'm not interested in my side projects at the moment. I had a spurt of motivation with the surround mixer project, but now I don't feel motivated to do anything else, yet I'm bored after and looking for things to do.
