tuttle@johnnynull You could stab someone in the chest with a screwdriver. That would definitely be an act of violence. But screwdrivers weren't invented for that. They are used for things like upgrading the RAM on your laptop. Guns' however, purpose is to kill. They are designed for that. What data you're referring to?

tuttle@johnnynull I don't buy the argument that guns are not bad, that they are just tools, innocent inanimate objects. I don't agree. You can't make a yummy lunch with a gun, you can't open your laptop and upgrade RAM with a gun, you can't sweep the floor with a gun, you can't ride your gun to work in the morning. What can you do with a gun? You can intimidate, threaten and scare/terrify, you can kill with a gun. Don't be fooled by America gun culture. Guns are not good.
I'm (purely) guessing that women who are interested in programming call it something other than "being a developer" (because not even developers say their job is actually "developing"). Maybe being a programmer?
(ie. does "web developer" as a job title put women off the job?)
I figure I'll approach a few people (female and male) I know about the idea, but also would love some considered discussion via the internet (haha, wishful thinking?).
Any female programmers out there that work with web technologies that can give *any* perspective on this? And anyone else that has had real-world experience with the topic? Or am I just going mad and overthinking it?

tuttle@johnnynull Definitely! For example, our kids know when Christmas is coming, but we don't make any hype about it, they don't get ads telling them they need presents, and when the day comes they're more than happy with some small gifts. Along these same lines, there are some interesting stats about eating habits in the documentary Super Size Me. If you've got a TV, throw it away. The kids will end up watching stuff you download for them anyway, and I bet you won't be normalising guns and violence in the mind of a toddler. :)
@miwilc@pmosetc@wrenpile@pnathan I live in NZ, a country total population 3-4 million, making us essentially just a medium size city. Our small towns are *really* small and are dying too, mostly because the jobs aren't there. So people flow to our bigger cities (eg Auckland, ~1.5 million) and this is *massively* spiking the cost of housing - AKL is now *less affordable than London* vs NZ median wage.
