Although I'm not a new mastodon user I've just joined fosstodon.org

"The misogynist trolls attacking Katie Bouman are the tip of the trashpile"
"Trolls latched on to Boumanβs achievement of the first black hole image with a vitriol that, in a saner world, would be shocking β but is par for the course for women"
@micahflee I read about that a while ago and it would be a deal-breaker for me too, if I lived in the US or could vote there. I hope that guy doesn't win the primary.
I don't agree with a fair bit of the things Chelsea Manning has done, but her whistleblowing is not one of those things. She served far more time in prison than any whistleblower before her. What else would Buttigieg want??
@jonw@rcwd That applies in my firms' corporate tax only. There's a lot about how corporate tax is done that could be simplified and the process could still at least be partly automated -- every year we talk amongst ourselves about how it's possible and great that would be. It would make our lives a lot easier!
My personal taxes are simple. I'm on the pay roll like everyone else. That could totally be automated.
@jonw@rcwd We can (and should!) further simplify our tax regulations and procedures.
Again, if you really wanted to, you could still file manually under such an automated arrangement. π
A lot of other people, like poor people, wouldn't have to pay to have their taxes done. Everything would be processed instantly and they would have no late penalties, no interest owed, and no stress.
@jonw@rcwd Revenue Canada has actually made significant corrections in my favour before. They aren't out to get you. They simply want the filing of taxes to be done properly and in accordance with the law.
@jonw@rcwd In fact, there are a few countries that already do handle taxes automatically without citizens filing them. The system works really well. If they really want to, citizens can manually file, but the automatic way is best for like at least 95% of people, because as you mentioned, it's not that difficult. So it should be automated.
Wow. I just discovered Larkin Poe, a real, awesome southern / blues #rock band. Really love their sound, and they are coming to #Vancouver this summer!
It doesn't work like that where I live, or in most countries, I am sure. If you pay the wrong amount of taxes due to an honest error, the revenue ministry will simply tell you what you messed up and send you a bill or refund for the difference
It's really no big deal at all.
That said, it's too bad all countries do not simply deduct what people & businesses owe or send a bill for that at the end of the year, instead of making people figure it out by themselves. That part is a waste
I did get the watch working after about 1.7kms, which was very helpful, and enabled me to at least see my current pace, if not my over-all time or distance.
It was just great to be in a race for the first time in some months, and first since I've gone back to a somewhat more intense training schedule. I'm pretty excited about the rest of the year!
Another amazing #Vancouver Sun Run happened this past Sunday -- over 40,000 people running and walking the 10K course around our beautiful city.
I'm pretty happy with my time, though a watch malfunction prevented me from seeing my total time, and without that I didn't realise I was 13s behind my goal time. Doh.
Watches aside, it was a really nice way to kick off the season. I'm feeling strong, ready to sign up for more races, train hard, and to improve lots this year! π πβοΈ
β Microsoft confirmed that "a limited number of people" had their accounts compromised β affected are @msn.com and @hotmail.com accounts; no enterprise customers are affected β the breach occurred between January 1 and March 28
I still have one from when it was Hotmail, but shit like this is making me consider Tutanota and other privacy-oriented e-mail services and drop all of the others.
