I urge you to consider continuing your formal education. You would obviously do well there. Higher education has been an incredible benefit to me, and has greatly enhanced not only what and how much I know, but how I think, my impact on the world, my career, and my life in general. It has made me a better worker, and a better person. Education has enriched my life in countless ways.

@jonw @tk Cool. I've been using Nextcloud for a little while too. It's really nice, and I'm so glad a switched.

I actually feel better knowing that I'm not being used as a product and that my data is safer. It's a similar feeling to when I quit FB and the bird site. 😄

@tk I'm moving all my work and personal data to self hosting and am really happy with how it's going. It seems to me that there are more tools to make it easier -- and more reasons to self host -- than ever before.

I don't find dealing w/ it cumbersome, and don't burn a lot of time on maintenance, but infrastructure and devops are my core skill-sets.

That said, to each their own. The nice thing is that there are many options for those who do, and for those who don't, want to host themselves 🙂

@rachel That's awesome! I love university. So I am jealous of you. 😄 I graduated some years ago, though I try to stay involved at my alma mater through volunteering and alumni activities to remain connected to the community and environment of higher learning and thought.

A triathlon is something I've always wanted to do, so I am really looking forward to it.

The big event is at the end of May. I'll try to remember to post about how it all went!

@TrailRunner_B Ha. Well, I bike occasionally, but I wouldn't consider myself a multi-sport athlete. I'm mostly a runner. I actually still have to learn to swim before the triathlon! My first lessons are next week. 😄

@starwall @Gargron I do the same thing. A small amount of melatonin really helps me from staying up way too late.

@TrailRunner_B You bet! You're putting the work in. The race is going to be no problem. 🙂

I'm looking forward to putting the Garmin on my bike. I'm doing a shorter triathlon sprint next month (so excited!), and that should help me stick to my goal pace.

No worries about the unit conversion. 🙂

@annika @Justaharpy I think the authors of that article were saying something like what you thought -- they were acknowledging that it can be hard for the outside observer to understand why someone with so much fortune and promise would consider hurting themselves.

Many folks also consider the death of such a talented young person, with so many potentially good things in their future, even more tragic than otherwise (it's always extremely tragic)

@annika @Justaharpy Ah. Okay. I think I understand where you are coming from. Are you saying that people in similar situations to the person featured in the article might feel bad or worse when reading that article title if they are contemplating self harm?

@hoergen I agree. The "voting" should also be removed from Reddit. It all motivates people to post things they think will get the most likes or votes, rather than to inform or provoke engaging conversations. It does not bring out the best in people, to say the least.

@Justaharpy @annika You may think I'm a horrible person for saying this: I don't understand what one would consider wrong with or toxic about this headline.

It explains what the article is about (an attempt to understand why someone did what they did). It did not appear to me to be disrespectful or harmful.

May I ask, why do you find it disturbing? To be clear, I'm asking to understand, not to argue. I won't "debate" this.

@TrailRunner_B Seriously, you're going to be fine. It seems you put a lot of distance in every week (it's slightly hard for me to tell, because I measure distance in kilometres). 🙂

BTW, I have the same watch, though I now have a 235, which I use for running most of the time. I'm going to mount that older orange one to my bike. I don't cycle nearly as much as I run, though it will be really nice to glance down at my handlebars and see my stats when I am cycling.

@Gargron A great thing about the #Internet as it is today is that we have ready access to an absolutely incredible amount of quality information.

A horrible thing about the Internet is that every idiot has an audience as well. Some idiots have massive audiences. Ignore them.

Mastodon is far better than twitter, for many reasons.
