@esureL I recommend Fedora KDE spin for new users -- and experienced ones too. 😁

It's stable, efficient, and very nice looking. I have installed it for non-technical people with great success. I've even set my *very* non-technical mum up with Fedora KDE spin, and she hasn't had a single problem! She needed a very small amount of assistance at first and that was it.

I've been using KDE for a *really* long time. When I made the switch to Fedora a few years ago, I was amazed at how smooth and stable my system had become. The refinement and speed of KDE Plasma in recent years make it stand out as well.

Fedora does also offer an xfce spin, which is also quite nice, though if you don't like Fedora, maybe you wouldn't like that either. I set up Fedora xfce for my mother in law's laptop and she is happy with it :)

With regard to LTS, Fedora doesn't offer that, but if you want to skip releases, you can do that and get basically the same result / experience as you would with only using LTS releases on another distribution

@jonw @thenomad Ah. Yes, I think that's wise. Surely Cloudflare, et al are not offering DNS and such for "free" out of the goodness of their hearts. ;)

I started setting up some authoritative servers with nsd but became busy with other projects. I want to finish that some time soon.

Let us know how it goes if you go ahead with it yourself.

@kemonine Have you considered #Fedora #KDE spin? It's fantastic -- stable, refined, and quite visually appealing.

Fedora also has very wide support, a large user base, and a massive package repository.

It is on a six month release cycle, though you can skip one or two versions if you want to, and upgrading from one version to the next is incredibly smooth.

It's interesting to hear where btrfs is at these days. All of our new RAID5 arrays at my workplace have XFS on them, which has been really good. We don't need the snapshot features there, though that could come in handy sometimes! I can see how it would be an especially useful feature on a home NAS.

@jonw @thenomad Do you mean a DNS resolver (the type you use to resolve names to IPs) or an authoritative server (the sort that keeps the authoritative records for some specific domains)?

I built my own personal Linux wifi router, which runs it's own resolver, out of an old mini PC. It's fantastic (faster & a lot more secure than the junk available in stores), & pretty easy to set up too! I run Unbound DNS server.

FreeBSD -- cool! I'm surprised that, as a SuSE person, you aren't using bttrfs for the NAS. Is it not quite up to par with ZFS yet?

@vinzv yah. It's a server too, but it's a home server for files and music. So occasional down-time is okay. 😊

Even servers need to be rebooted, of course. At work, we put servers behind load balancers and in cluster configurations in situations where services must remain up at all times (which is most cases), so that we can take them offline for maintenance pretty much any time.

@brejoc Nice! KVM is truly fantastic. We use it extensively at work.
