This is the last moment to make your voice heard. Together, we’re going to make sure that every MEP knows that the voters of Europe are watching them and taking note of how they vote. https://saveyourinternet.euhttps://t.co/PTpYj0Ti7S
@alana Building your own machine for something like this is actually quite easy and fun. I recommend it.
I do almost zero maintenance on my Linux media server (I set updates to install automatically). It's worth looking at used hardware (refurb.io, Newegg, etc) to save money and the environment as well. 🙂
@aral I hope you aren't offended by my pointing out that the right word to use in your post is "affect," rather than "effect." I'm mentioning it because I would want someone to tell me. 😶
Put your money where your ❤️ is: celebrate "I Love Free Software" day by donating to projects, developers and organisations in need. Every little bit helps. Share #ilovefs.
Some ideas of donation-worthy projects, people and organisations (more coming over the next hours):
My response to a dangerous turd of an article by Bart van der Sloot (co-founder of Amsterdam Privacy Week – sponsored by Palantir and Google – and docent teaching “Privacy and Big Data” at Tilburg University)
Mr. Sloot attempts to reframe privacy as a “science” and shame those who work to protect it for having a “pro-privacy agenda” & not being “neutral”. He also calls for “new rules” to disallow such biased behaviour.
Listening to @HackerRadioShow on @nowplaying and loving what they're saying about "Don't leave politics out of it. Politics is in everything. It's not a dirty word."
I really, really am honored to announce what I'm about to announce.
So when I started thinking about what hackers.town:2600 would be, I had a dream for some spoken word shows to be in the mix as well.
We are going to be doing our own podcast soon that will be broadcast as well... but I reached out to some old heroes of mine and asked permission.
Sometimes all you have to do is ask.
@HackerRadioShow has granted permission for us to rebroadcast their show. These guy are awesome and have a weekly show about hackers/hacking/making on WBAI in NYC... and we will be rebroadcasting their shows in our mix soon...
Guys.
Go follow @HackerRadioShow for the love of god, show them numbers to get them excited about the fediverse, because they have a bullhorn.
@Rob_T_Firefly rob is one of their co-hosts, and plugs mastodon regularly on the air.
@aparrish When we finally achieve equality, the world will, of course, be an astoundingly better place. Imagine what things will be like when 50% of the world's doctors, lawyers, politicians, and techies are women. :)
@aparrish The gradual progress toward equality in the workplace -- and the urgency in which we need it -- encourages me to go further in my career, to try my best to be an example for others.
I hope those things motivate women of all backgrounds to enter male dominated fields and do the same (I realise how hard that may be for many women).
@aparrish That some say programming is something mostly men are interested in is definitely misogynist. This particular type of misogyny has actually been around for ages and extends to nearly every field where there is wealth and power to be found -- medicine, law, executive management, science and engineering, elected office, and so many others.
It's incredibly satisfying to see some change in this regard, while we have so much farther to go.
@jamesvasile MySQL and MariaDB have outstanding documentation with useful examples. Apache HTTP Server also has extremely comprehensive, clear documentation. GlusterFS has very good, easy to follow documentation as well.
Surely, there's lots more. Those are a few I can think of easily.
