Some people tend to get depressed because their brains are biologically tuned to be better at perceiving and focusing on negative information in the environment.

Living in a hostile environment is particularly bad for these people. Interestingly, there is some evidence that living in a supportive environment is particularly *good* for these people.

Many "risk" genes for mental illness may be more accurately described as genes which make people sensitive to the environment, for better or worse.

our social presence is currently quotes by women, announcements about blog posts, updates on publishing deadlines, calls for submissions, a bit of "hey join our patreon", and a few other bits of internal announcement stuff.

we don't run ads so social is how we get readers/fund stuff.

@Gargron In his book, _On Bullshit_, Frankfurt talks about something called 'bull sessions', where people try out new ideas and argue things in front of friends and colleagues as a way of auditioning ideas - absent commitment.

I'd kind of thought that labelling something a 'hot take' was a way or partially disclaiming the idea while trying it on, like a bull session.

For me, this is part of working out and clarifying my thoughts.

Others may approach this differently, of course.

There's these studies about how once you commit to an opinion in front of someone you're less willing to back down from it even in the face of new insights; and online in 2018 has this culture where people rush to comment on everything that happens as fast as possible, you know? Is that a good combination?
