I tried to talk a local community radio station that is just starting out to set up a mastodon server. Thought it would be a good way engage the community.

    Them: what’s Mastodon?

Me: it’s kind of like an open source twitter

Them: Blank stares.... What’s twitter like? We already have a Facebook page, isn’t that enough?

    🤦♂️

@stuarttempleton Not having followed specific future legislation doesn't automatically make one sloppy or inconsiderate, much less a dick.

A company running e.g. Mastodon would probably have to make some serious improvements to it to be compliant.

    > USB charging

Practice safe hex. Use protection. Dumb charger cable, power bank intermediary or explicit smart charger adapter are all good.

Dear stranger child on the bus: Please don't say "pappa" with an angelic voice.

For a tenth of a second I was thinking "omg he was supposed to stay with his grandparents and I don't have a ticket and a passport for him and how could this possibly be happening oh of course it's not happening it's not him".

Yes, that is my power cable. I'm posting this over the bus WiFi. The seat is super comfy. It's cheaper and faster than the train (for this particular route).

    I love Bus4You/Nettbuss. https://social.heldscal.la/attachment/1530071

Giant Tesla battery 'saves millions and cuts outage emissions to zero'
      from The Independent
Tesla’s enormous battery in South Australia has led to a massive drop in the costs of backing up the region’s power supply, potentially saving local people millions of dollars. New figures presented at Australian Energy Week suggested the new system, which is powered by wind turbines, has reduced the price of expensive power outages by 90 per cent.

@natecull Either way, having a generic null is almost always a bad idea. Use a specific sentinel value instead, like e.g. how Maybe does it. Just like how you should at least throw a MyPackageException rather than GenericRuntimeException, so that callers have the slightest chance at figuring out in a granular way what went wrong.

@natecull My favorite null is the bottom, usually written like your robobutt, but not the same thing. The bottom is the one element in the bottom type, which is a subtype of every other type, so it breaks every attempt to avoid it with simple type constraints. I like it because it is evil.

Java's null is kind of this, and I believe SmallTalk's nil is very much this, although of course those two examples behave very differently, as ST nil accepts every message and returns nil (I believe), whereas trying to do anything with Java null raises an exception.

The non-evil alternative is Maybe monads, I guess?

    > IEEE floating point's NaN, which is Not a Number and certainly is not Zero but is probably also not Null, or is it?

For added hilarity, Not a Number is usually a Number.

    Nulls!

I just don't know what to think about them.
