@lorenschmidt hey everyone writing mathematics: math does not exist in a noble mathematical void which absolves you of any accountability.

No kidding, my complex analysis prof taught us conformal maps, and then showed us how the Russians designed shaped charges with them before the war.

What you can do with #mastalab (there is a chance that the post gets automatically split - it's a feature)

    - Timed muting.
    - Schedule toots.
    - Export toots.
    - Save your toots in db to filter them (useful go find what you posted months ago).
    - Cross-account actions (long press on action buttons to pick up another account).
    - Pin tags.
    - Follow instances.
    - Set a proxy.
    - Use Tor onion instances.
    - Translate (with text obfuscation).
    - Automatically split toots - 1/3

    • Doc Edward Morbius ⭕

@dredmorbius nothing stays perfectly decentralized but it becomes possible/necessary at a certain point in the cycle to take apart what's become over-consolidated. you establish new systems of trust, and hopefully mechanisms to fall back on if they fail you.

if there weren't a general crisis of faith in institutions there wouldn't be the zeitgeist for it right now.

    • Nate Cull

@natecull Automating recommendations is just not a pressing problem. That's what a "social network" is for. People recommend things to to others they know one-to-one or by broadcasting to the world (hopefully with some trust involved). And we can have "social networks" that don't require surveillance. Why do these things keep coming up? Who are the people that have difficulty finding things to look at? What real value to people are there in these things? :/

I've used this switch to #socialcoop to weed out most #tech stuff on my timeline. I'm more interested now to have #personal #discussions, to get to know people and learn how they live, what they do, to share the #pain and the #joy, to #dream together and make something happen, to let go, to get into the flow, to run the show, you know? I want to change the world and maybe you want it too?

(trying to work through the story/narrative discourse distinction and how the narration of a story always has itself as part of the context; how the narration itself is what creates the illusion of the story having existed as a separate entity in the first place; stories aren't *about* their narration, but the narration *can* reach into the story and itself become part of the story)

"The prisoners in the famous dilemma cannot change the constraints imposed on them by the district attorney; they are in jail. Not all users of natural resources are similarly incapable of changing their constraints. As long as individuals are viewed as prisoners, policy prescriptions will address this metaphor." #ElinorOstrom #CommonPoolResources #GoverningTheCommons

Zuckerberg believes that Facebook’s problems can be solved. Many experts do not.
users, politicians, and governments rarely agree on the rules in the first place. The issue, experts say, is that Facebook's audience is now so large and so diverse that it's nearly impossible to govern every possible interaction on the site.

That moment when you ask the Current Weather app on your new phone to find your current location and it gives you the weather for where you used to live in a different country, before you even had the phone or the app. Hmm… 🤔

uber’s innovation isn’t its app but its deflection of liability onto the workers. pdx radio cap is a worker-owned taxi service and they have a dispatcher app too, and it’s just as convenient. all the trimmings that uber uses to enhance the disenfranchisement of drivers are unique to their hostile motivations. the quality of life improvements that software applications offer need have nothing to do with the poverty gun.

Have a friend whose a civil engineer for a large metro traffic department say last week:
