Why not just do regular rounds of unfollowing? If people are unpleasant or just have little to say, why not cull them out of your TL? Maybe I'm missing something.
Your rant reminds me a bit of a buddy of mine who often laments that Linux was made "too easy to use', thus attracting "The Horde".
How much does the structure of a SN inform its culture/content anyway?
When "The Horde" arrives, does any of this matter?
Sentry is a really awesome product, happy for you. Wishing I could score a job at an open source company one day. Unfortunately here the options are pretty much: work remotely :/
I see what you mean and feel, Sean. Unlucklily, I think that finding "stupid" content is part of the battle. If we pursue the goal that people move from proprietary networks to free ones, we need to be ready to welcome humankind with its "stupidity". We all still need to learn how to behave on internet.
Something that I have neve understood about Mastodon and the like is: why choosing microblogging, when we have "complete"/standard social networks. Why set limits to speech length. Doesn't it limit communication's and thought's depth and lead (among others) to "stupid" contents?
Open-source error tracking that helps developers monitor and fix crashes in real time. Iterate continuously. Boost workflow efficiency. Improve user experience.
The shitposting is cancer, and there's so much of it - the GNU Social half of the fediverse actually does it pretty well, but the Mastodon half is mostly awful. Post-ironic-memes aren't funny. Slightly misspelling words intentionally doesn't mean you're part of some elaborate in-joke. The hidden content jokes are stale and everyone's using the same joke templates from Tumblr circa two years ago. On top of that, the meta-discourse and moderator drama is getting so bad that it sucks the fun out of the entire timeline.
I've met a lot of great people through Mastodon, and I think it's a great app overall. I particularly like that it works well on my phone, so that I can engage with the fediverse on the go. That's awesome!
There's just too many goddamned hipsters, and they're the worst offenders. They''re just perpetuating the worst parts of #Twitter and #Tumblr, and the political discourse on there has all of the depth of a Facebook comment thread.
@dsh Ah great :) And now I'm annoyed that the different networks use two different methods for distributing replies. And I fear it won't be resolved just because we move to ActivityPub. :/
