Some takeaways:

1) there is a growing network of people working on a #public federated chat network based on XMPP. There has been a lot of activity in the space in recent years. This activity is partly due to the development sprints, many of which last year have been organized by @pep

2) a bunch of new (and existing) clients continue working on usability (cross platform, consistent UIs, support for mobile, end-to-end encryption). Particularly web clients such as ConverseJS by @jcbrand are promising.

3) A directory to search public discussion channels exists: https://search.jabbercat.org/rooms/1

4) Ongoing experimentation with what can be built on top of XMPP as a federated protocol by for example @Goffi

5) Conversations for Android has secured funding to implement a Voice / Video calls!

#FDroid maintainers are still unwilling to take down apps that are used to access Gab. Even for-profit companies like PayPal, GoDaddy, and Medium have terminated their relationship with Gab, so for a commity project, this behaviour is simply embarrassing.

Gender should be opt-in, not opt-out.

(and opting out is extremely difficult and almost impossible in our current society)

I don't think it's right to force people into a system like that from birth. If someone wants to identify as a certain gender later, they can do that. Until they tell you their gender, I think it's best to assume that a person is just a person and not put any gender labels on them based on how they look or act. Even the pressure to choose a label can be stressful, sometimes you're just you and no matter how many labels there are, none of them feel right.

I think there need to be more options for people who don't feel comfortable existing in a gender system.

thinking about putting together a company that does those teamwork exercises and retreats or whatever for companies that can’t make their employees engaged or happy. all the paperwork and the pitch will be super appealing to the managers, but on the day of we separate the management and just give the employees a workshop on organizing a union.

Kindness and cooperation is human nature.

Humans are soft and weak, we wouldn't have gotten anywhere without helping each other, cooperation is our biggest strength.

Competing with each other and fighting for resources is only hindering our progress. Fetishisation of competition is capitalist propaganda.
