"Smarsh maps her family’s impoverished lives against the destruction of the working class that the Reagan era wrought: the demise of the family farm, the dismantling of public health care, the defunding of public schools, and wages so stagnant that full time laborers could no longer pay the bills. Readers will learn what Smarsh did: the working poor in America are sold a lie. Working hard in this country probably won’t get you ahead after all."

While this is true, the http://www.mutualaidnetwork.org/ are working on the problem using a hybrid of mutual credit and other currencies. Requires a pretty big mutual credit network, which they have in Madison WI, and then they are trying to organize a cooperative economic network around that. They have also paid developers in "real money" as well as mutual credit.

Many cooperatives could form to develop various apps that us the protocol.

And also many cooperatives could use the protocol, apps, etc, to conduct their cooperative activities.

If you consider a platform cooperative to be a centralized and hosted system owned, operated, and governed by a cooperative, it is easy to tell what the cooperative owns.

If it's an open protocol, how does a cooperative own it?

A cooperative could form to create and maintain software that runs the protocol. SSB is starting more than one organization like that

Or cooperative could form to host sites that run the protocol, for example, social.coop. (part 1 of 2)

While they are not sufficient, I would emphasize a bit more that open protocols are necessary.

I don't think it is possible to get where I think we want to go using one platform where everybody needs to use the same software and host. Doesn't allow enuf room for variation or local creativity. And the singular platform will always get too big to understand.

But boots on the ground organizing live people are also necessary and more important.

Not sure any protocol cooperatives exist yet. But (for example) implementing a co-op on ActivityPub would probly qualify.

I think that is what Matthew Slater has in mind, last time I heard.

@dajbelshaw how close will #moodlenet be to a protocol co-op? Or would it be more like a platform? Or a hybrid? Or not a co-op?

Josh, I'm not trying to change your mind, but put something on other peoples' minds.

What you are working on looks very interesting and useful.

There is in the set of decentralized networks taking off now, in Mastadon/ActivityPub and elsewhere, a need for something like that.

But it would need to be open source and federated.

It wouldn't make very much money from the decentralized networks, so probly not a direction you want to go in. Continued...

The dynamics when a member of an oppressed group complains in general about their relative oppressor group are very different than when a member of an oppressor group complains in general about an oppressed group.

E.g. ain't no such thing as reverse racism. The dynamics and meaning are totally different.

This often makes CIS white males (like me) very uncomfortable.

We inherit a lot of evil. Need to end the evil, not feel guilty about it, though.

Apparently SSB can federate, people have done it, but not very much.

And a couple of people said they are working on a bridge between SSB and Holochain.

ActivityPub might be trickier to bridge because it is on the Web and while HOLO is a bridge, the main Holochain networks are not on the Web, and neither is SSB.

Our view of the required architecture for economic networks, including cooperatives, is "instances of one agent", where an agent can be an individual or an organization.

The individuals can federate with the organizations and each other, and so can the organizations.

Many individuals will work with many organizations, and form more new ones. So will the organizations.

So my next question is, how does e.g. peertube or pixelfed mesh or interact with e.g. pleroma or mastadon or where people consider their main fediverse presence to live?

    (I guess I better try a few...)
