@emsenn I saw that :D I have "main jeans" which I like so much (and are in perfect condition despite being worn constantly for years) that I just got an extra pair of the same.
Good point! Do you think adding that individuals involved can opt-out of anonymity would help? Otherwise how would you word it? Keeping in mind that this is designed to be enforced in a decentralised/federated way (starting with community/group moderators, then instance administrators, and finally Moodle HQ being able to cut instance off of the "mothership").
It's a sad comment on our news media that people can be employed not only as journalists for our daily newspapers, but as editors, then switch to writing #FakeNews for industry front groups (or spin for government departments). We desperately need a new generation of journalists who see corporate PR as the enemy of truth it is, not as potential future employers.
one of capitalism’s basic tricks for selling stuff to you is to put the doubt into your head that you are WITHOUT something that you NEED
this isn’t a REAL need but it is a method of tricking you into believing that what capitalism wants you to buy is something you supposedly lack in your life
and with a lack of oversight and control on this system of propaganda delivery, capitalism could manage to sell our basic needs to us, and for those it has thrown into poverty it works to convince them that to climb the ladder is how they can acquire the more expensive ‘needs’ capitalism sells to them on top of their basic needs
Google, who became the most powerful corporation in the world by selling web ads: Hey in the future every computer program should actually be a website. Don't worry about why, just do it. It'll be cool. We're the vanguard of technology or something
People: ok
People: hey why does this calendar i downloaded have ads in it
@stevenroose@z428@hinterwaeldler Also, WhatsApp isn't the first time that a big 5 tech company took a huge userbase built on XMPP and gave the community the finger
Among the things that ActivityPub can do is provide discovery mechanisms for communicating about capabilities and bootstrapping key exchanges. I've seen indications that's something the Pleroma devs would like to do with XMPP
@z428@stevenroose@hinterwaeldler actually this is also beauty and curse of XMPP - it's flexible and could be tailored to particular needs. And you, as a user have choice - maybe you are privacy oriented and don't want contact discovery then use server x, maybe you do, then user server y. #XMPP has also built-in mechanism of discovering features and it can be used to gracefully adjust the service.
@z428@hinterwaeldler That's not really true. #WhatsApp is by far the most popular messenger app. It ran on an #XMPP server for most of its existence. XMPP has a standards body and a protocol for proposing standard extensions. So WhatsApp should have proposed extensions for all the features they found were missing from the protocol. They should have enabled federation while other providers catched up on implementing the new protocol extensions. Instead, they decided to build a #silo.
