if this makes no sense to you, consider that both parties went that route after the pulse massacre. not because of what happened (which was a tragedy as well, again, obviously) but because it was an opportunity to invoke 9/11.

taking that approach about 9/11 in particular is *deep breath* again, what do i even say about that?
other than it really pisses me off, and makes me very inclined not to trust someone. it's utterly fake.
this may sound harsh, but remember, people were tortured and murdered because of this kind of rhetoric. dressing it up by saying that muslims were oppressed (which is obviously true) doesn't change that.

which is *exactly* what pisses me off about the types of centrism that pop up on here (and elsewhere) at times.
it's as if someone made a line of get out the vote greeting cards. wtf

lastly, if you think that 9/11 was a tragedy (which it was, fair enough) and that's worthy of reducing down to a take, which also happens to be effectively false because of how contextless said take is?
i don't even know what to say to that. it's like living in a vacuum where politics doesn't exist.

further, satire is a political weapon. saying "don't joke about 9/11" as a blanket statement detooths satire, at least some of which can be used to resist any or all of the above. it's *enabling* the sorts of maudlin sentimentality that were used to *justify* the oppression of muslims, as well as the rest of what i just described.

9/11 was used not only as a pretext for ultra-nationalism and repression (as well as torture) of muslims, it also was used as the pretext for two wars, neither of which have ended. as well as building an entire security apparatus, that has been used to commit numerous (if not ubiquitious) violations of civil liberties.

@AzureKingfisher @showerpickles @garbados yes, exactly. i've found sunglasses and headphones (earbuds, so i can hear something if need be) help, but it's still an ordeal.

@foxwitch when there's an "upturn" (lol -_-), they can start getting away with gouging people again, "efficiently". they do it just enough that everybody doesn't move wholesale, but enough that they can raise the rents even further.
unless they find a way to just really stick it to people, like a mass eviction. which i'm sure they'd act on if they deemed the net result as being profitable.

@foxwitch we've been through this before. the thing about buildings like this is that they're cheaper when everything totally falls to shit, because everything they do is based on "the market". so if you're not locked in, you're a potential sucker, erm, customer during a "downturn", and the rents reflect that.
a while later: *everything starts breaking down*

@foxwitch that's their whole deal. they've got annual rent increases while doing the bare minimum down to a science.
at least the flooding due to broken toilets has stopped. for now, at least
