which makes having an actual conversation about when something goes sideways, really difficult. doubly so if someone is white, because it's not like disability-based oppression just wanders off somewhere, necessarily.
the reality is that both of these things happen all the time:

also, this isn't to say that people aren't responsible for whatever happens as a result of their neurology -- but *in general*, that gets taken as license to label us all as bad, or start playing respectibility politics games.
"well, we'll accept you, but only if you go through PTSD-inducing behavioral modification".
"we'll accept you, but only if we can make money off of you".

there definitely is a "whiteness problem" in *some* corners of the autistic community, but going off on people who are having meltdowns is not the right place to be looking, nor is someone getting overwhelmed.
if anything, we could use actual help dealing with aspie supremacists and the kinds of channers who recruit white male teens into fascism, because of the percepttion that we're all good at handling large data sets. (which is a stereotype, but it can be true).

calling people out for their neurology is a bad move.
that said, it's not that white privilege isn't a thing! but it looks more like this:

(context = Jack Robison = John Elder Robinson's kid. both have designed instruments for Kiss, and are at least famous-adjacent. not sure about Neli Latson)
or tbh, this:

we're still annoyed that people on here frame them as being the same thing, as if someone having a meltdown is just "bad" or "doing that for attention" or "spoiled" or whatever, because they're white and disabled.
it's like being at an Autism Speaks conference. good luck having a cross-community discussion.
you wouldn't say that (i hope) to someone having a panic attack, so i fail to see how this is any different, in effect.

@xenophora @error_1202 new folks especially will "fall in line" and not even realize that people are making critical, ongoing problems, if not actually being kinda shady.
because doing otherwise looks like doubting someone's ability to lead, or possibly gives someone who is having their "knocked off the horse" moment, room to fall back into passive indifference.
but that doesn't make uninformed obedience good, either.

@xenophora @error_1202 kind of "down with road to Damascus moments"? or at least, ushering that in en masse is a good way for people to burn out, quickly while driving people off. but sure, it happens.
i'm questioning if that's a good/healthy pattern, while also not encouraging "oh, just sign the petition, it'll all work out!" as a be-all, end-all.

@anthra @error_1202 i'll start to burn out, perseverate or melt down, including not being able to speak. insisting that people be "on all the time" is ignoring people's needs

@error_1202 we've been doing activist things long enough that we have a relatively high tolerance for looking at big terrible things, but we'll definitely fry to a crisp in short order if we try to do it non-stop, for everything or even a few things at once.
performative hand-wringing just makes it worse, unless someone's using it as a sort of checkbook activism without the check. if people want fickle allies, i question what they're up to.

one of these years, some of you will figure out that we kept trying because we actually give a shit, not because we wanted to tear *you* down as much as you kept trying to tear us down.
until then, i wish y'all the best of luck in the parts of your work that actually empower and liberate all.

increasingly, our approach on here is the same as offline -- walk away, wait for a better situation.
but i will not stay silent if i see you oppressing people, either. or us, for that matter.
in general though, we're working to just unfollow, mute, block and ignore people's bullshit -- *when* it is that.

instead, what we end up with, online and off, is a situation where it's impossible to *constructively* criticize anything, while people are doing the least effective work possible, both necessary and not. frequently while critiquing anybody to the left of, say, the clintons over and over again. not because of people's failings on the left, but in general as well.

for us, "justice work" is liberation work, but not necessarily the other way around *because* things have gotten twisted around such that a lot of what people are pushing for are reforms, in the absence of movement work and direct action.
which doesn't have to be incompatible! any of it. but knowing how to work together (even informally, or at a distance) is *itself* a form of movement work.

criticizing someone's ideas for being liberal, or more or less being a part of keeping oppressed people down doesn't mean "stop fighting" -- it means "fight better". it also is not an accusation.
the fight for disability justice is at the same place that trans rights were in the 1990s, if not before -- ignoring that, or dismissing people's concerns, means that you're enabling the kinds of people who are oppressors in other kinds of ways as well.

that said, i'm getting a little tired of being ignored, only addressed quietly, or frankly, attacked or subtooted the shit out of for pointing this out and giving a crap enough to take everybody's needs into account, as best i can.
why is it that bringing up things that have been around on the left since the late 1980s is like i'm proposing some incredibly incomprehensible idea? it's not.
