@revenant@jk the city predates german as like, a language and the name originated in its former latin name was “villa” which originally meant just “house” but later came to be used synonymously with “town” so it’s actually properly “town the city” but grammatically wrong in addition to in modern german being “because of the city” but grammatically wrong
@revenant@jk my fave weird town name is actually "weil der stadt" which sounds like somebody messed up grammar trying to say "because of the city" but actually it's properly originally "weil, der stadt" which is "weil, the city" to differentiate it from the other Weil that is not a city. the grammar is still wrong (would have to be "weil, die stadt"), though - which is because when the name was written down it was usually in the form of "(something happened in) weil, der stadt". and that stuck.
@jk it's so weird tho, but then, it kind of fits? like town names are usually chosen by the people who live there so I guess at some point somebody went like "oi, this place is a real Muddy Piece of Shit innit. why don't we call it 'mud pool'?" and everyone just agreed
@jk this toot reminded me to look up what the name even comes from and while it's not like, a Pool of Livers like the organ, it still is apparently old english for "mud pool" which is less creepy but also not very flattering
if you'd prefer something SUPER TECHNICAL, you can actually look at the spec of activitypub, the current-generation protocol that the fediverse uses http://activitypub.rocks/
(what I should mention here I think is: Old Konqui is by Stefan Spatz, new Konqui was designed by Tyson Tan, who also designed the new Krita and Kate mascots and you should definitely look at his website https://tysontan.com/ )
