@adasauce I feel like car dealerships no longer fit into that category, unless we're talking about Bob's used car lot on the corner, that maybe sells 6 cars a month, but I get the general idea.

This seems like the ideal business that people are talking about when they push the "buy local" narrative. As long as we live under capitalism, that seems at least a more ethical/less exploitative model than the huge corporate one.

@adasauce I'm not sure what "lifestyle business" means in this context.

I hear "lifestyle" and I think of marketing/selling stuff like Harley Davidson: their motorcycles cost waaaaaay more than comparable bikes from other brands, but you're paying for the image and "lifestyle" associated with owning a Harley (also, better slap that logo on your truck, so people know you ride a Harley even when you're not riding your Harley). Obviously, that's not what you're talking about.

@mpjgregoire Ouch. "We have no idea how we'll do this, but we promise to figure it out if we get re-elected."

I mean, sure, an election campaign may not be the time for substantive policy debate (not sure I agree, but this gets tossed around a lot), but at least give SOME sense of how you'll achieve what you promise, otherwise it's just another campaign promise that people don't believe you'll honour.

Liberals don't like anti-capitalism but they love anti-consumerism which is the victim blamers version of anti-capitalism

@interneteh Yes. While specialization has certainly been good for the economy as a whole (due to efficiencies and such), it mostly seems demoralizing and soul crushing for humans as individual people.

Let me farm spreadsheets on Monday, tend the community garden on Tuesday, attend my neighbourhood council meeting on Wednesday and then Thur-Sun is the "weekend" to do with as I please.

@adasauce Thank God. Boomers "finally" trying to be heard would be a giveaway if it didn't have the word SATIRE right there in all caps.

@adasauce That *has* to be satire, right? Do boomers really talk about themselves that way?

@keithzg @mpjgregoire Although I admittedly don't know much about modern games that are specifically aimed at younger children, I'm under the impression that modern games are a lot more in-depth and immersive, which is maybe not so great for young kids if you want to actually drag them away from the screen on a moment's notice.

@interneteh I haven't been listening to Street Fight lately, so I can't remember: is he doing this as part of Street Fight or is it a separate podcast that he's doing just for this project? (Basically, do I need to subscribe to a new thing or just get caught up on my backlog of Street Fight episodes?)

@lunalapin Honestly, your response to me earlier on this topic immediately made me think of "The Authoritarian Personality" (not the Adorno book, but a very simple illustrated thingy I remember reading in, like, Grade 8). One of the traits is something like "extreme respect for authority figures" or something and this just made me immediately think of that.

@lunalapin Assuming ethics and law are synonyms is pretty bold and unthinking, coming from an academic, I feel. But I also feel like a lot of ordinary folks probably assume this is true (but can also easily be shown that it's not, with a couple of examples).

People that take the Glasgow-Edinburgh train have developed this anarcho-communist ticket sharing economy and I love it. It's because return tickets cost literally only 10 pence more than a single, so people just buy returns and leave the other ticket at the station they arrive at.

It's fucking beautiful and more folk need tae know about it

I must have been at least 6...maybe even 7 (maybe it was the end of Grade 2), because no way was my brother playing Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt when he was 3-years-old.

@masterofthetiger This is a concern. When we got our NES, it was the start of summer and the rule was that we couldn't play all day. If we didn't play outside, we'd lose it.

We probably played non-stop the first day. After that initial novelty, we'd play a bit and then go outside because it was summer and why would we want to spend all day inside playing video games? But, again, games were simpler and not as engrossing back then so I don't know what age is appropriate these days
