The nuclear family was a mistake: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2020/03/the-nuclear-family-was-a-mistake/605536/

This long read manages to be both deeply conservative and surprisingly progressive (is this centrism?). I thought a lot about kinship and created/chosen family when we were much more certain that we were only going to have one child, but it's almost more important with multiple children because you gotta get people to help share the burden so you can really enjoy the good parts.

The family structure we’ve held up as the cultural ideal for the past half century has been a catastrophe for many. It’s time to figure out better ways to live together.

It's not much, and he's still very combative about green energy advocates and environmentalists, but Jason Kenney is at least admitting publicly that the world needs to (and, indeed, is already starting to) shift away from fossil fuels.

This is a pretty hilarious grift, but also extremely shitty because the kind of people who would actually buy this thing are those least likely to know what they've just done and will be extremely frustrated and confused when they try to call a help line about the problems they're having with "Windows 12."

@fssofdeath I eventually plan to try out the Manjaro build from an SD card. It's just a matter of getting a card and setting it up.

@fssofdeath It's doing great. I haven't really had a chance to distro hop, but the factory Debian build is solid. I just ran the latest mrfixit update and everything is running smoothly.

Other than that weird audio glitch the other week, and the fact the Firefox occasionally doesn't launch properly (killing the process and retrying always fixes it), I haven't had any problems.

Best $300 laptop I've ever used.

@applecandy yeah, I managed to fit it all in one go. They used so much packing paper to protect stuff that it wasn't as bad as I thought when I first saw the box.

@kepstin @rabbithearth I've got one (more like this one: https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/telescopic-3-in-1-snow-brush-61-in-0304434p.html?rrec=true#spc). It does a decent job. The roof bars for a roof rack are the bigger obstacle, because they get in the way of the brush. 😐

I started playing DCSS last night and was surprised by how much fun I was having. Also, I experienced my first death in less than 15 minutes (might even have been less than 10 minutes). I laughed. But it was easily to laugh about permadeath when I wasn't yet invested in the character.

@msh @puzzled Yup. I'll be picking up a Chromecast Ultra soon, hopefully this weekend, and then I won't need to deal with the built-in interface (though, it is nice to be able to launch and navigate Netflix from the TV remote instead of always having to use my phone).

@msh @puzzled On the plus side, they replied to my "complaint" email and issued a refund for the damaged products in less than 24 hours, no questions asked (I did include a picture).

@msh @puzzled I had never heard of it before either, so I added a bottle to my order. I never expected it'd freeze and explode in transit! Oh well. Maybe I'll try again in the spring, hopefully it will fare better in transport. I also lost two beers to explosions (and the rest were pretty well frozen, so I guess I'm lucky the whole box wasn't a disaster zone).

@rabbithearth It actually frustrates me that I have a hard time properly clearing the roof of my current car. It's higher than anything I've driven in the past and it bothers me that I can't clear it as completely as I should.

@puzzled I wish there was a way to adjust the time between episodes, because it seems to vary by which version of the Netflix app you're using.

On my Chromecast, it's 30 seconds between an episode. On my TV's built-in app, it's about 3 seconds which is way too fast and doesn't even give you breathing room to consider the episode you just watched (a necessity with some heavier subject matter shows).

This woman has been pregnant for pretty much her entire adult life and, in fact, since she was 14 since she's 44 and her eldest kid is 30.

Her husband had a vasectomy after their 9th, but then reversed it when they decided they wanted more kids.

@adasauce "Dialogue means you agree to do what we want."

The messed up thing is that even our settler laws aren't really on the side of the company. The Supreme Court has held that the Wet'suwet'en have authority over their land, having never ceded it and never signed any treaties. This is literally an invasion. Not that it'll be seen that way by most people. 😔
