...anyways I'm getting very amusing spam invite requests now, by way of Russia, literally all from 5.188.210.0/24 and all putting ads for shitty websites in the comment.

And the account name ALWAYS ends with "mus".

    Joemus
    Lisamus
    Paulmus
    Tinamus
    Benmus
    ...and so on-mus.

I'd block that IP range but it isn't enough volume to bother and it amuses me. Like, what's the point of this spammer? It's an absurdly low effort attempt on their part.

Since my quiet little instance was getting a number of spam accounts signing up but not confirming, and deleting unconfirmed users rather foolishly spawning thousands of tasks to announce to the fediverse users none of them should know about, I decided to make new users request an invite.

This has been good. Now these spam signups show as "pending" instead of unconfirmed so I can reject without clogging up my sidekiq (still not sure why unconfirmed is different)...

@bulkington to be fair they only reinvented the wheel once, then everyone else just made it an npm dependency for absolutely everything.

@vertigo oh crap yeah, forgot about that. The only components were luma and chroma not truly component video, basically like what you could get out of a Commodore 64.

    Absolute madness of course.

@stolas @fafnir North Americans had lots and lots of RCA connectors, all alike but carrying different signals, for the most part.

Analogue composite on one RCA Jack, each audio channel on their own other RCA jacks...

Or ig you were fancy and had component video, each component on its own RCA connector. But not RGB...YPbPr instead.

Then S-Video was invented that put all the video pins on one connector, but audio was still separate.

    It was madness.

@ink_slinger @djsundog I may finally put an order in with the arrival of community edition units. I'm not likely to keep the UBPorts installation intact because I just can't leave well enough alone, however I like being able to support such projects.

Plus nothing stopping me from getting a different back without the logo if it bugs me.

@ink_slinger my target is "weirdos on the internet" since that also generally covers my friends, family and employers anyways, but YMMV

@mattskala @lain ...because if this, after a McD production run is done the line is thoroughly cleaned and inspected to ensure there is no possibility of allergens. On production lines that make kosher fries this sanitizing procedure is overseen by a Rabbi who literally gives the production line his blessing before they resume production.

I know what day it is but honestly it is the truth. I've witnessed it.

@mattskala @lain Interesting fact about McD French fries. The suppliers they contract have special cutter dies and use specifically graded potatoes to make the chips come out within exacting size specifications.

McDonald's also supplies bags if powdered ingredients that the fry factories are required to add to the brine they blanch the fries in. The exact ingredients are not disclosed to the supplier.

Not even the makers of the fries know what is in them...

@ink_slinger I like the idea of observing April Fools Day by recalling stories of past absurdities like this instead of pulling pranks on people

@djsundog I have a TV that quit the month after warranty expired. Took it apart and noticed puffed up capacitors, so I spent about $5 on capacitors and an hour to swap them out and put it back together again, and 10 years later I am still using that TV.

Hope it works out something like that for you too.
