The less tolerant we are of contrasting opinions, the more that #corpocentric networks benefit from throwing together clashing views to generate "engagement". When it is okay for people to have views that disagree with mine, I'm less likely to get in online shouting matches and generate extra advertising revenue for those companies.

@tomayac oh god.. can we not have AMP in emails? There probably will be a whitelist or something and it already requires showing images by default.
It's like DRM in your emails, nice.

@maiyannah It's the same sort of regulatory capture as happens with the Linux project. Developers often like to think that they're immune from being influenced, but if you splash enough cash then most people can be bought into collaborating with any dubious political project, letter agency front organization or corporate monopoly agenda. It takes a rare kind of stubbornness to resist the temptation.

@purplehippo  Eugen doesnt fully understand how he's been manipulated, but he's also actively choosing not to try to further understand, because he has a large financial incentive not to.  In law, this phenonemon is called "willful blindness" - you are actively choosing not to see something.  For example, actively choosing to look away during the commission of a crime.  They're basically paying Eugen to "look the other way" while they use Mastodon as a dataset to strip mine.  In this case, no idea how it works in the EU, but a situation of willful blindness cannot be used as a defence in civil or criminal court in Canada.  And this is rapidly going into the kind of territory that if someone cared to, they could go after him legally.  He is treating privacy very much not just unethically, but illegally.

To given Eugen the benefit of a doubt, I would first have to possess a doubt.

@bob @neil @gemlog Generally speaking, I'm not someone thats very supportive of protests, largely because in my younger years, I was involved in quite a few of them for gay rights, and they didn't seem to accomplish much good to offset the many negatives.  I say that to preface the statement that even as someone who has that inclination, I usually find the BBCs framing of them extremely dishonest, and it often ends up making me more sympathetic to the protestors than I would otherwise be, when the BBC is obviously trying to turn me against them.

Life is fragile and fleeting, treat it like the precious thing it is.  You don't know how long you have left, and some of us don't have long at all.  Seize the day.

I always find it a bit cute when people ask if something available on the civilian market is actual CaDPat or a civilian reproduction.  It is ALWAYS a civilian reproduction.  The good ones have matched the digitial pattern, colours, and NIR properties well.  Department of National Defence does not license the CaDPat pattern except to a very, very few places with domestic manufacturing.   This isn't like the Fins where you fill out a web form and they make sure you arent a baddie and then you get high-resolution stuff right from the source.  DND is very protective and proprietary about the pattern.

There's a couple really good reproductions out there, though, that you're not really going to be able to distinguish from the real thing.

This is basically a form of "regulatory capture" except for developers: they can infiltrate and weaken the system by grabbing at the developers that program at it, financially or otherwise (but financially in this case)
