sometimes it's hard to understand other cultures, so many things are taken for granted. where I live, 16 and 17 year olds can't drive, but they can vote. they can give consent and have sex, but they can't be held criminally responsible for their actions

What Cancel Culture Looked Like in the Middle Ages | NYT Opinion
      from Invidious
The internet didn't invent the angry mob. In the satirical Video Op-Ed above, cancel culture is reimagined with the help of a medieval mob. Pray thee, the video begs, is there any room left for transgression? These days, it seems like everyone’s being canceled — from celebrities like Louis C.K. and Kanye West to ordinary high-schoolers. Some cancellations are temporary (we’re looking at you, Aziz Ansari). Some seem permanent (has anyone even seen R. Kelly?). But all are very public. And rarely is an apology good enough. Even more rare: redemption. Last month, former President Barack Obama urged young people to leave cancel culture behind. “This idea of purity and you’re never compromised and you’re always politically ‘woke’ and all that stuff” he said, “you should get over that quickly.” A mob quickly rose to the defense of cancel culture, sprinkled with a bit of “O.K. Boomer” judgment. For a brief moment, we wondered: Could even President Obama be canceled? weird nightmare... company spied on people with mikes and cameras, published decisions people faced for others to bet on choices, and people got paid for following the advice. not widely known: the company often tweaked the numbers for social experiments

    that's globalized capitalism for you
Brazil is one of the largest produces of food, but because exports are quoted in USD, our locally-produced food gets priced according to international markets and exchange rates
we used to be self-sufficient in oil, too, but international prices still dictated how much it cost to refuel

if you tried to sell the apartment before the cleaner did their work, wouldn't the potential buyer think of how much it would cost them clean it up? :-)

gasoline is so comparatively inexpensive in Venezuela that the Brazilian city closest to the border doesn't even have gas stations. people drive some 40km to refuel, and that's still worth it

I too have an objection to the extremely low information density of the average video. I'm not one to lose focus easily, but I have a lot of trouble watching videos these days. which is kind of ironic considering how my writing tends to be --verbose rather than synthetic
