under capitalism, small (typically family) business owners and independent "enterpreneurs" are no more than another kind of proletarians, working their asses off for the dream, but making hardly enough to pay mostly rents (space, credit, ...), with little left for workers' and their own salaries, but without any of the assurances and protections that some jurisdictions have for workers, such as time limits, vacations, ... think of the precarious situation of uber drivers, food deliverers and whatnot, and see how owners of small shops, restaurants, etc are not so different. I guess the more assurances law gives lawful workers, the more the Market will promote small businesses to work around them to extract more value from the vulnerable

here's a suggestion on your choice of metaphore:
I'm not sure I like the notion of a bridge
architecturally speaking, bridges are two-ways, and people are still likely to be pushed the wrong way, or believe they prefer to go the wrong way
a slide or zip-line sound more fun and more like it :-)

maybe that's not all. what provisions do these formats, and the culture around them, make for making corresponding sources available and to enable users to package modified versions?

I don't know so much about the US, but in Brazil most of the big media, where dominant opinions are manufactured, represents economically powerful private interests, thus right-wing and conservative. it's hard for me to imagine that they'd manufacture hatred for trump, but easy to picture them seeding hatred for biden, even though biden would be easily recognized as a right-winger in brazil. from where I stand, it looks like US has always had two rights

consider using a license that defends users' freedom even for the artwork. none of the CC-* licenses demand users to get corresponding sources. without them, modified versions of the artwork can become effectively proprietary, in that making further changes to them is no longer practical

there's no reason why installing server-like software should be any harder than any random crApp people install on phones all the time. the reason it may seem harder is not natural, it's architectural choices. network service provision has been designed to promote centralization, and client/servers are designed to deprive clients of control. IMHO we should be working on challenging and reversing those trends, not embracing them to our own disadvantage

Meta is also a conjugation of the verb that means intruding, meddling, in Portuguese. I found that quite fitting. "Não se Meta, Zuck!" means "Don't you intrude/meddle, Zuck!"

well, not true. f*k is still a service name that people should quit from. meta is just the name of the company that operates that and other luser-farming services
