Gab actually uses a custom user agent to grab stuff.

Mastodon does the same, but this makes it easy to make sure gab instances can't pull from you!

add

return 403;

To your nginx configuration. That blocks all requests with a user agent that includes "gabsocial" (case insensitive)

You can also add other user agents, at your leisure

It just returns a 403 if they try to pull

I have taken a decision for Gab. I read some of their tweets and learn more about their move.
As an app developer, I will always remain neutral. My personal opinion has the same weight that any other users and I will never put it in front of others.
The move of Gab is to have Playstore and iTunes apps where their apps were banned. That's why I took the decision to block Gab to don't give them an entry where they were banned with all risks that can bring for the app.

So Gab has decided that their own code that they spent $5M of investor money developing is so unsalvageably bad that they're going to use Mastodon's code instead, with the added bonus of leeching off of our apps (with Gab apps being banned from app stores)

This is an early warning to fellow admins to be vigilant and domain-block them on sight, when/if they appear (unconfirmed whether they intend to federate), and to app devs to consider if blocking Gab's domains from their app is necessary.
