@karen  Most of them are very difficult to immerse yourself in without a huge time commitment, which is necessary to remain even slightly competitive.

@lnxw48a1 I have a strong aversion to the notion of people as some arbitrary 'class'. At that point, you're not regarding them as people anymore.

@rysiek @moritzheiber One interesting side effect I found on this with Deb/Ubuntu: If the service was originally written as a SYSV unit, it's enumerated by systemd on boot, creating on-the-fly unit files. Thus, any changes you make using systemctl won't persist, as it will be recreated next boot.

I learnt this the hard way with Avahi (which is socket activated), when I couldn't understand why it kept coming back. I had to actually remove it to get it to stop. Not really a shortcoming of systemd as much as it is the distro maintainers, but really, really odd behaviour.

@rysiek @iliana  Is that some socket activation strangeness?

@karen I remember a clear line between the start of the GPU era in...'97? And the rest of it. As soon as PC's got the fancy shaders and coloured lighting it was a different world.

@lnxw48a1 There was a feature a few weeks back about such a commute - http://www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-lopez-commute-cherry-20171216-story.html

I'm not that surprised. It's an interesting place, like nowhere else I've seen in the US.

Her six-hour commute each day seems crazy, but her affordable rent is not

Carolyn Cherry starts her commute from Hemet to downtown Los Angeles two hours shy of sunrise. Ungodly commutes, as we know, are not new to Southern California.

@lnxw48a1 From some of the descriptions it appears that the nature of some of these homeless problems is highly varied.

Portland had a lot of lifestyle bums, from what I could see. It sounds like LA has a fair fiew people whom simply cannot afford to live there.

@lnxw48a1 I saw a little documentary about the trailer park near LAX once; home to airline employees that are effectively homeless. It was fascinating, if a little depressing.

Pretty interesting story about homelessness in LA. Quite shocking, really.

L.A.'s homelessness surged 75% in six years. Here's why the crisis has been decades in the making
      from latimes.com
A succession of mayors have tried different fixes since homelessness emerged as a crisis in the 1980s, but if the problem continues to climb at current rates, it will swamp even the best efforts.
