"[...]traditionally secretive world of diplomacy is now being acted out on social media. The governments of 169 countries (88 per cent of all UN members) are now on Facebook, and Denmark even has an Ambassador to Silicon Valley."

Understand govs making use of new comms technologies. But concerning when that channel is in control of one organisation with no accountability. And an ambassador to the tech industry shows the disproportionate power it has.

    Full Fact is very helpful.

I was listening to a podcast which said around 40,000 EU citizens working as NHS staff had left since the Brexit vote and we're facing a huge shortfall.

It's a bit more nuanced than that reading the Full Fact page on it: https://fullfact.org/health/eu-staff-nhs-what-has-happened-referendum/

Can't get quite so up in arms then. Bit boring checking facts all the time. I like social health care and I like Europeans though, don't need no numbers for that.

EU nationals make up a similar percentage of the NHS workforce in England now as they did in 2016.

Hey hey social dot cooperators, new member here. I'm a designer, educator, and organizer who spends a lot of time with credit unions, humanitarian orgs, and artist and maker communities.

Working in service of more just societies built on cooperative values led by empowered participants.

Hoping to ask better questions each day than I did the previous day.

Thanks to @mattcropp for the invite into this community. Very excited to learn more about each of you. Give me a toot and say hello!

Reading more Iain M. Banks. Use of Weapons. It's good. His writing style has gone from super linear and rip roaring to totally nonlinear and introspective in the space of a couple of books. I've enjoyed all of them so far. This one is much more comical too. The Culture is getting more morally ambiguous by the book as well, which I like. Love a bit of moral ambiguity.

@ntnsndr No - certainly not explicitly anyway. She called out Google as the instigators of surveillance capitalism but didn't name names other than that.

Went to a talk by Shoshana Zuboff today about surveillance capitalism and her book on it. I would like to read the book. Anyone read it? From the talk I got the impression that she has provided a very rigorous analysis of the problem, but less of a prescription on how to resist and change. But I think that's acknowledged, as she herself said 'naming is a first step towards taming'.

@neil I actually prefer the model proposed by https://go-op.coop where a railway would be owned between passengers and workers. But yes municipalisation is also an important part of the debate. I wish there were a term which was a catch all for all these kinds of things (including public ownership). Maybe social ownership. And then something is better social ownership the closer the people who rely on it (either for use or work) are to owning it.

Public ownership is a better term than nationalisation.

One reason being that we should think of public ownership at the local level, as well as the national.

I made a little embed handler for Wordpress so you can just paste a link to videos on invidio.us and have the embed pulled in automatically to your post. You could easily just add the iframe in manually each time you post a video, too. Either way - no youtube links.

Really nice account of someone feeling a lot better, in the face of universal credit and housing issues, after coming to a Restart Party (community repair events that we run), getting something fixed, and feeling involved in the community.

Really interesting to learn that the NHS was part inspired by the Tredegar Medial Aid Society (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tredegar_Medical_Aid_Society).

It was a mutual society providing health care free at the point of use in South Wales. Nye Bevan, who spearheaded the foundation of the NHS, was from Tredegar.

When I ditched the big social media networks I intended to use email as a way to keep up with friends and family. But my email right now is a dumpster fire of pointless mailshots and administrata. I can definitely tidy it up but also thinking email genuinely isn't good for maintaining social ties? Was it ever?
