@nicksellen@douginamug Same, I am very compelled by municipalism at the moment. For federation reasons but also because changing a city/town feels more manageable and replicable than trying to change the whole world in one go...
Great article from @jasonpjason on decentralising the internet and the successes and failures of federation. Suggests some new approaches and some policy support (but not a StateBook) are needed for decentralisation that actually empowers. Platform coops play a role. We need counterantidisintermediation to prevent platform lock-in. I think the 'centralised services win (partly) through better UX' argument needs examining though. https://newsocialist.org.uk/decentralising-the-internet/
Good article. Feel like it straw man's Srnicek and Williams in a couple of places but offers good critiques in others. I find the terms of the debate, accelerationism and degrowth, overly polarising. Also feel it's wrong to see technology and 'growth' as synonymous. But overall the article is positive and looks at how to take good ideas from both. And there are definitely common aims to be built upon. I http://unevenearth.org/2017/01/accelerationism-and-degrowth/
@bigl0af I'm not really sure about solid. If this new company is backed by venture capital then an exit has already been agreed and the users have been sold before the game begins. Also I've heard a lot of bad stuff about json-LD - that it's maybe impossible to fully specify or validate.
@squirrelturtle Yikes. Hadn't thought about it being used that way. Even assuming the authors of this one aren't misunderstanding the climate studies, I'm hoping the suggestions would be more 'let's think about how to build resilient communities', less 'hey check out my bunker'.
"We didn't like the way profit-driven corporations captured and enclosed the web. So we've decided to start our own profit-driven corporation to reverse that trend"
Insofar as Ive followed Solid, it bugged me to see little to no mention of other attempts to (re)decentralize the web. But the technical side of it is very interesting.
Now, to see it take a dive into capitalist rhetoric and VC funding, I hope it crashes and burns.
"a free market of fair return for value would stimulate innovation"
"thrive by delivering products and services that consumers actually want"
"anyone with an idea and the energy to work hard can prosper"
Sinuses giving me gip again. Honestly who's idea was it to have empty spaces in your skull, that are prone to getting clogged up and giving pain during pressure change? I'd happily do without, can't I just fill them up with Sugru or something?
'Fix' partly in the sense of cleaning up the mess made by the move fast crowd, but also fix as in maintenance - for things that work well, taking pride in keeping them running for a long time.
