Some progress on the squatting propaganda piece.

Anyone know whether my depiction of the squatter symbol is mucking up some of the #symbology?

All I know is that it depicts the flow of "You enter, you have ups and downs, and at some point you're evicted" and I'm not exactly finding a good explanation of the semantics behind this symbol. :P

One simple reason to get rid of money: Debt.

There's more good reasons for it, but this is probably the one that fucks over peoples' lives the hardest.

Debt is a prison and it needs to be abolished. It traps people, cities – even entire nations.

Society can't afford widespread debt – having much of the population basically unable to participate undermines the very basis of having a civilization in the first place.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostile_architecture

I feel like "hostile software architecture" is a term we should establish.

Google and Facebook are the absolute masters of this, since all their profit comes from it in one way or another.

Designing applications specifically with the goal of squeezing as much data out of users and making privacy as hard as they can is probably the most "successful" example of hostile software architecture.

Designing around displaying ads would be another one that goes hand in hand.

@ctrlaltdog This kind of brings me to a point I haven't been able to formulate properly before: Corporate "diversity" isn't really about making things more diverse – it's about making everyone the same.

So Bavaria already got its police law, which came into effect in parallel to the GDPR and basically transformed the bavarian police into a secret service.

This is literally the first time something like this exists in Germany since the GeStaPo (Hitlers secret police).

Lower Saxony and NRW (where I live) are coming next.

Police will be able to banish people from inner cities, forcibly put GPS bracelets on and even detain them - on nothing more than "I had a hunch".

    Not gonna take this shit.

And don't give me that "but I'm using it over WiFi/Bluetooth/messenger pidgeons" bullshit. Your mobile phones baseband (the chip used to connect to cell towers) is a complete blackbox with its own OS.

Combine this with shit like glued-in batteries and you get a mobile tracking device you can't ever reliably turn off without just outright smashing the whole thing with a sledgehammer.

I mean, whenever you use a mobile app, you're locatable because your phone connects to the nearest cell tower.

And we already know that this sort of data is routinely used for "targeted" killings in drone warfare.

We also know that government organizations set up fake cell towers (stingrays being the most famous) at demonstrations to snoop on who is there and (at least trying) to get into their phones.

I know this is at least true for the US and Germany, but I'm expecting this to be routine.

I absolutely hate how new messaging tools are always mobile-only.

I don't trust mobile phones hardware and I don't trust their software either.

I have no need to have my movements and connections to people tracked 24/7 and I have even less need of supplying messaging apps with globally unique identifiers associated to me (like, you know, a *phone number*).

IMO this is the main weakness of pretty much every messaging app of the last decade and it'll bite y'all in the arse sooner or later.

    • ☭⚑ Comrade Angles ⚑☭

@Angle I mean, one of the big strengths of open source is that you don't need classical big organizations to create hugely powerful things – an amorphous group of people connected over the internet (or even a single individual, given enough obsession) can do it now. :)

The difference being that for native applications the computer doesn't download the whole program every time it's started – the executable won't be replaced without your permission. For web applications that control is taken from you and firmly lies with the site operators.

This disempowerment of the actual users IMO is a defining feature of dynamic web applications and it needs to die.

There's a hole in the english language for this.

In German, we have a special word for the end of the workday – It's "Feierabend" and literally translated means "celebration evening" and I think that's beautiful.
