@nickmofo true, but the point of the mime act is to show you that the "box" is imaginary and absurd, not to, like, demonstrate in general that boxes are real and this mime sure is in a real box! (I don't know if that's the point of a mime act, I have never been to a mime act)

(though actually this quote helps me make an argument about why language model text generation bothers me: although language models are 'mimes of meaning production,' some researchers who create them don't seek to 'overflow the borders of signification' but instead to *fill* the borders of signification to the brim, to show that a language model detailed enough will at last be the same thing as "meaning" itself)

in case you're wondering, if you scale the sound of "mastodon" by 4x, it spells "mammasavinstawn"

inferring spelling from phonetic feature sequences zoomed along the timeseries axis. (basically, smooshing and stretching the sound of the word and getting the neural network to try to spell out the sound)

Anyone know any US-based public librarians who are active on the fediverse? I don't just mean aware of it, I mean actively participating on at least one federated social media instance

@varx (so I end up having to do weird/gross searches that essentially conjure the marked category into existence, because the only way I think to solve the problem is to see if anyone else has been in the same situation as me. which is gross. the screencaps of the search that implied the category distinction were just a really stark illustration of this, of how google couldn't find a basis to conceptualize an overlap)

@varx yeah, that's what sucks—I can see the gap in my observation (like, as a reasonably well-informed person I feel like there should be at least ONE non-white author that comes up in conversations about this genre), but I don't know if the gap is because of my own prejudices, the prejudices of the people who taught me, or other cultural gatekeepers. or some combination of all three.

(not saying these two things are incompatible, my bet without actually knowing anything about it yet is that the "literary nonsense" genre, like many genres, makes certain systemic exclusions from its canon)
