@xahlee For me a big part of it is language study. My hope is that going through the process of designing the visual appearance of kanji/hanzi will help me memorize their meanings and pronunciations.

However, I also think it's important to be able to have different typefaces in order to convey different feelings. They are like accents or tones of voice in speech. If you want your document to be perceived in a certain way, you need the right typeface. And those have to come from somewhere.

@xahlee yes, he emailed me about stroke-expand in FontForge a few days ago. I haven't been much involved in the FontForge project in the last few years myself, but my name is still on a lot of Github issues there.
