This strikes so close

Hey folks! You may have seen this already, but I've fixed the link, and I'd still like some help/feedback on the thing.

I'm (still) building an open source platform for hosting web comics. I want it to be safe and usable by as many folks as possible, out of the box. But before I get too far into a rabbit hole of difficult-to-change design, I want to ensure I consider all the options users would actually appreciate in a community platform like this will be.

No one, when they sincerely ask you to check your privilege, wants you to feel bad. Some people asking you to check your privilege may not care how you feel one way or another, but no one really wants you to wallow in guilt and shame. Instead, they want you to begin the difficult work of disentangling your image of yourself, what you're invested in, from structures that are actively harming others.

Well, that's it! I successfully spent 2019 reading and blogging about each of the first 365 RFCs.

I have more posts to come, including some related research that didn't quite fit with the RFC-a-day format, and an interview with the brilliant outgoing RFC series editor, Heather Flanagan.

This is a friendly reminder that when two people on the fediverse have a disagreement, you don't *have* to express your opinion about it in their mentions, use the opportunity to make a loosely-related political point, or join a spiralling public drama about it.

It can be hard to break the habits we formed on platforms where techbros have monetised our negative emotions, divisions, and innate desire to belong. But your activist energy can be better directed, and your mental health will benefit.
