@moonman @augustus But there's noodles and there's noodles. Like saying they have sausages all over the country in Germany. -

Regret getting an iPhone. Walled garden, none of my favorite open source apps and many apps seem to have ads. Also kills backgrounded apps so no IMAP, XMPP notifications without push. Buy a cheap PAYG data-only SIM for a second Android phone? (Can do voice calls over VoIP.) -

@aparrish This is a colossal PITA and with python I try to limit scope with functions (esp. in Jupyter) and/or treat variables as immutable outside of list comprehension etc. -

@cwood These days compilers should warn you but I never shook the habit. In conversation from quitter.no permalink -

Weird programming habit after a painful experience aeons ago: always putting the rvalue on the left in a C equality test: because 4==x is a valid statement whereas 4=x fails to compile. (Bitten by writing if x=4 instead of if x==4 in prehistoric times) In conversation from quitter.no permalink -

Then there's Matrix https://matrix.org/ which is federated and appears to be an attempt to address some of the problems of XMPP. But I've not really tried it. A lot of exciting developments but at the same time, a lot of fragmentation. Bottom line: for mortals (non-geeks) I'm forced to use LINE/Signal. (Refuse to use WhatsApp.) In conversation from quitter.no permalink -

Briar looks an interesting project for secure messaging and can work over Bluetooth / Wifi when Internet unavailable. But you need to meet a contact in person to add. (Good: hard to masquerade, bad: need to meet in person.) Tox is another but heavy bandwidth usage makes it impractical on mobile at the moment. In conversation from quitter.no permalink
