if we keep finding ourselves lecturing users of a social medium that there's a rule they must voluntarily follow or else risk ostracism

that's...maybe that's a hint the rule _isn't_ really voluntary, and ought to be codified to avoid confusion?

basically, maybe instead of complaining that people don't CW enough things--and sometimes it's not easy to tell when it's necessary--maybe the social medium should simply _enforce_ it?

@thatdelphox there's been a lot of "security through obscurity" think when it comes to Mastodon's "safety"

institutionally? short of what you're doing, using access controls to their maximum potential (and yes, they are a somewhat crude instrument, but what else can you use), there's nothing preventing abuse

@djsundog the world of chess provides many odd examples of openings being named inappropriately, none more so than the inferior Black defense 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 f6 (White can take the e5 pawn anyway, with advantage). A Renaissance Portuguese chess writer named Pedro Damiano mentioned the defence briefly, only to say that it's bad; nevertheless history saw fit to name it Damiano's Defence.
