@goldest Welcome! Yes, Nazis and other terrible people are not welcome here, and I've had a good experience on Masto. I'm also a historian. If you want to post history stuff, use the hashtags #historodons and #beforemoderntimes. And please post pics of your dog! "Cat Mastodon" is well developed, but "Dog Mastodon" is still in its formative stages. The hashtag for cute dog stuff is #mastodogs.
@jesse Yes, it really is like a plague. This kid I had to let go of yesterday started his descent with antifeminism and MRA/"Manosphere" crap. That's the gateway drug. I've seen it happen numerous times now to young men. They start with, "what's wrong with the dating scene," and end up wearing MAGA hats and cuddling Pepe the Frog dolls. It's horrifying.
I'm very tired of dealing with alt-right people, alt-right sympathizers, and seeing alt-right crap pop up in ostensibly mainstream discourse. I've lost more friends to fascism in the last 5 years than I have to cancer or any other cause. I'm really, really tired of it.
1. "He didn't really mean that." 2. "He's just a kid, he's very naive. He'll grow out of it." 3. "He's a fundamentally good guy who's spent too much time in the dark corners of the Internet." 4. "He doesn't know about the problematic connections that writer/blogger/celebrity has." 5. "We can't just cut ourselves off from everyone who disagrees with us."
Well, now that the drama has subsided and the subject has shifted from That One Guy to fediverse migration I'm going to get off the federated timeline now and get back to more important business. Like boiling squid-ink pasta. And maybe #amediting.
I did get my first viral toot, though. The one with the article link about Facebook banning Twitter crossposts and the walled gardens retreating from each other...
@glyphicality I'm here over on .at and I like it, though only a minority of local toots are in English. Moderation is top notch, though. No Nazis. Everybody is pretty friendly and it's small, so a nice corner of the fediverse.
