I want to jump of a damn building into a dumpster full of wine bottles when I listen to his music, but I LOVE James Blake's production. It's not easy to get that kind of sound from synths...

@lazypower Yeah, man. We all gotta make that choice, because it's both.
That's the beauty of it.
And you're right, it is going to take some work, but it'll happen. There is already growing disgust with the status quo now.
There was a time when AOL was the juggernaut. Now, we just chuckle when we see the logo.
We can do it. We've done it before.

@lazypower I'm just trying to contribute something useful, my man.
I love the web. I believe it is the catalyst for all of us understanding each other.
But we gotta take some ownership of it for us, because there are those that just want to turn it into an ATM.
And fuck that.

@gcupc Absolutely agree. In terms of running one's own server, it's still a pretty daunting task, but I do think it's getting better. We just need to accelerate that process.
The biggest challenge is just getting people past being intimidated by the web and just look at it as another skill to pick up and utilized. Kind of like what MySpace did for casual users and HTML.

@bob I hear you, man. And based on how FB and Twitter are treating their public, it's only getting worse.
For me, I'm tired of asking these places to change. They just don't give a shit. So, I'll just do my own thing.
This is the 21st century. We do not need any of them.

It's not going to happen overnight, but slowly begin to lessen your need for external services like Google, Twitter, FB, etc.
There are very viable alternatives for all of these sites. And a lot of them are free. Especially if you know how to run your own server.
It just takes a little know how and effort to learn how it all works.

The web is a great place, but a lot of tech companies take advantage of people's casual knowledge of it.
If I had to give one piece of advice moving forward for anyone who is on the web it's own your shit.
Yes, you'll have to pick up some new skills, but the long term benefits of controlling your identity on the web makes it a no brainer.

@lazypower I appreciate it, my man. I'm just speaking the truth.
Ha, and I failed Computer Science when I was in college. The journey from then to now has been pretty wild.

At the end of the day, design will always be my first love because I'm an art guy, but it is very empowering knowing I can develop and deploy anything I want.
Just give me a book and a coupe days and I'll pick it up. I will always love the web because it affords me the luxury of owning my work from top to bottom.

@lazypower It's definitely a process to pick up that skill because it's a lot more abstract than coding or dev ops. I went to school for design specifically, but there are so many opportunities to pick it up if you have the time too. It just takes some effort.

@lazypower It all started from design, man. I got tired of dev telling me what can't be done, so I learned development. From there, I learned sys admin b/c I didn't want to rely on one to make the changes I need to host my work. One thing just led to the other.

Server administration is probably the most valuable skill I've picked up in the last few years. It is a thankless task, but if you can get the basics down, there is literally nothing you can't do on the web.
