@xahlee @muti277 This is a good point. Why does out-sourcing, or privatizing, censorship somehow make it more excusable?
"You accepted $company's TOS when you joined, so get over it" is a lame retort that many people, myself included, like to make.
While that may be true, it doesn't mean people should just roll over and accept it.

@trekrich New fresh meat coming online everyday. But, the pendulum is bound to swing the other way at some point.

@xj9 @skoll There seems to be a growing market for libre hardware. The Librem5 phone got over $2M in crowd-funding.

@angristan I was about to post the same thing. I'm not sure why Schestowitz wants to paint with such a broad brush with this.

@mattskala I'm also not sure, but three possibilities come to mind.
a. The connections were made before federation was disabled
b. They are running some kind of white list
c. There are firewall rules that allow outgoing server to server communications, but drop anything incoming.I guess I could make an account to check it out. On the other hand, meh. If the thing is a honey-pot, then I'd rather not.

@mattskala I think they have federation completely disabled, since I get a 500 error trying to look up profiles from any instance I try from. I find the place to be quite suspicious, especially considering who their admin supposedly is:

@mattskala Where did all the users on counter.social come from? They got up to 9000 just about overnight.

@IndyHavoc @DrChris @mrmcmayhem Currency in the US was not truly centralized for good until 1913. All state guaranteed currencies stand on the backs of money that came out of voluntary exchanges between people. No gov't necessary.
Mediums of exchange become currency when a critical mass of people use them for that purpose. There's no hard rule on when that happens. Therefore the question "Is crypto-currency money?" has a funny answer: Yes when it is and No when it isn't. IMO

@exo The design of money is hardly for aesthetic, it's all anti-counterfeit measures.

@DetectiveHyde @augustus James Corbett did a good job of laying it out back in 2013. There's also Eva Bartlett, who he just interviewed a few weeks ago.
