Later evolutions of the protocol omitted the requirement for a "thread length" field, and instead allowed clients to denote the completion of a thread using a special "end of thread" signifier or by including the length field on the last post 2/2"

"... while early implementations of the Thread Context Protocol required clients to plan out their entire message ahead of time and include the total number of posts in each message, many developers found this restriction onerous, and disliked that they weren't able to take advantage of stream-of-consciousness optimizations for better performance and memory management. 1/

hey everyone. we have decided to indefinitely suspend cybre.space user @matilde due to concerns about the safety of members of our community. this decision is informed by credible reports (for which there are receipts) of a history of emotional abuse and manipulation, and by recent behavior which has raised red flags for us. further details are available via dm if requested. thank you.

@00dani @lizardsquid but it definitely still seems relevant given that we were discussing pbta more generally

@00dani @lizardsquid I've never actually read the apocalypse world book, I'm getting my GM advice from the dungeon world book, which talks about these principles in detail.

@lizardsquid @00dani but on a more general level, all pbta moves, by design, have a specific effect. *applying* that to the fiction that exists is a little more complicated, but the trigger -> move -> effect sequence will always give you more mechanical guidance then just "the GM does whatever"

@lizardsquid @00dani in general, and this is just a playstyle thing, i've never been in a game where outcomes were determined arbitrarily by GM fiat. Outcomes of a roll have always been the result of a discussion—sometimes a negotiation, sometimes a consensus. the GM obviously has more information about the world and what's in it, but the player has just as equally as valid of a say on what they think would fit the fiction.

@00dani @lizardsquid not every game is going to be for everybody. but I do think you can appreciate a game while knowing it's not for you

@00dani @lizardsquid strong disagree. I'm not just saying their settings are cool, I'm saying they way the mechanics *convey* the settings and, more broadly, the genre/milieu of the story is really cool and good to think about.

@00dani @lizardsquid fate is cool but there's soooo much that apocalypse world and derivative games do in the way of codifying a setting and milieu into the structure of the game that's super super valuable

@jalcine mmmm i feel you but this isn't just blowback for specific actions, this is viral outrage for even requesting feedback on a proposed design.
I'm *all* for collective action to mitigate harms—the webaudio changes were poorly conceived and poorly implemented, and the outcry against them was super important. But when I see people taking that and running with "anything chromium developers suggest is Pure Evil Surveillance Capitalism" it's so, so, so missing the point.

@jalcine well, currently a chromium engineer saying "current web request blocking is a huge performance cost, let's explore a flexible declarative grammar that can be compiled down at runtime to replace it" is being spun into "google doesn't want you to be able to stop being tracked", so no, i don't think it's a particularly extra take.
