      ¿Qué es Mastodon?

      Mastodon es una red social de microblogging (500 caracteres) al estilo Twitter o GNU social, aunque hay algunas instancias que no tienen límite de caracteres, que es una de las cosas novedosas que trae Mastodon frente a Twitter, además, no hay censura (aunque sí códigos de conducta que pueden variar en según qué instancia alojes tu cuenta) y otros muchos beneficios que comentaré más adelante, pero primero definamos conceptos:

      ¿Qué es eso de las instancias?

      Como he comentado muchas veces, Mastodon es una red social que se organiza de forma descentralizada y federada. Que sea descentralizada quiere decir que no hay un solo servidor que controle toda la información y que controle un pequeño grupo de personas, sino que se trata del conjunto de muchos servidores dispersos por el mundo cuyo código es totalmente libre, haciendo que cada uno pueda elegir el servidor que más le guste o crear el suyo propio. Por otro lado, que sea federada significa que forman entre ellos una federación; esto es, que pueden hablar entre ellos, permitiéndonos que un usuario en una instancia “mastodon.social” pueda seguir a alguien en una cuenta “mastodon.art” y charlar con otro en “todon.nl” sin ningún tipo de problemas.

      ¿Por qué usar Mastodon?

      Mastodon es una comunidad de usuarios que valoramos nuestra privacidad y a los que no nos gustan la censura y consideramos que Internet no debe estar manejada por 4 enormes corporaciones como son Google, Facebook, Twitter o Microsoft y que está cansada de los griteríos e insultos de Twitter.

      Desde mi experiencia (que no tiene por qué corresponderse con la realidad) he visto que se trata de una comunidad en la que nos aceptemos a todos tal y como somos y discutamos desde el respeto, entendiendo que si hay gente que opina diferente probablemente tengan sus motivos y que insultándoles no vamos a cambiar nada. De todos modos, siempre hay alguien que se pasa todo esto a la torera, pero para evitarlo están los códigos de conducta (por ejemplo, este es el del servidor que uso yo y sí, está en inglés, pero también hay instancias en español).

      No tiene publicidad ni grandes inversores que puedan manipular el funcionamiento de Mastodon.

      De todos modos, os animo a probarlo y seguir a mucha gente, darle un tiempo y hacer vuestra línea temporal vuestra.

      ¿Qué instancia debería elegir?

      Simplemente sigue estos pasos, está ya todo preparado para que cualquiera pueda usarlo en seguida 🙂

      ¡Me encanta! ¿y cómo puedo usarlo desde el móvil?

      De nuevo, aquí hay una lista de aplicaciones móviles, yo personalmente uso Tusky, pero Mastalab y Twidere funcionan también muy bien 😉

      ¿Qué hacer al empezar?

      Simplemente rellena tu perfil y listo. Una cosa que suele venir muy bien es presentarse. En inglés están las etiquetas #introduction e #introductions. Puedes usar cualquiera de esas, las dos o ninguna, ¡a gusto del consumidor!

      ¿A quién sigo?

      A quien quieras, obviamente, yo suelo seguir a bastante gente del servidor mastodon.art, pero también puedes seguirme a mí o a cuentas como Pictoline, Reddit o AtomJack (que suele colgar cosas bastante chulas) e incluso a tus amigos de Twitter (comunmente llamado birdsite en Mastodon).

      También podéis seguir a gente de GNU social como Menéame, ya que Mastodon está basada en GNU social, por lo que tienen muchas similitudes y permiten a sus usuarios seguirse mutuamente.

    Para que quede constancia. Mastodon/Gnu social/quitter etc, no son "twitters sin censura" es una federación en la que los administradores de cada instancia moderan (y censuran) como creen conveniente. Y si no te gusta: te vas a otra instancia o mejor: MONTAS TU PROPIA INSTANCIA
