@mykola you forget the ten year preamble that was identica, gnu/social, and pump.io; that's part of the story too. the fediverse is nearly the same age as twitter. i had an account on identica for a long time back in the day. my more recent relationship with the fediverse started at loadaverage.org, before mastodon even existed.

most of the users during that decade (after identica died) were free software people who joined gnu/social for a lot of different reasons.

In the meantime, advertisers can track the faces of the people looking at billboards and have an estimate of their mood.

Now combine the two things and imagine a government that gives you a score based on your mood, and the happier you look, the more privileges they give you.

like, cooperative movements are struggling to compete with traditional corporations and they're looking for more advanced technology to help them get an edge, but at the same time not competing because that's against their religion or something but we can start small businesses that implement cooperative models RIGHT NOW and actually compete and make enough to support our families and strengthen the middle class and our local economy

Many in my timeline disparage "algorithms," maybe in response to Silicon Valley surveillance capitalists using the word to excuse and distance themselves from the biases (and worse) in their systems.

I think it's important to remember that it's not the mere use of algorithms that's bad, but the fact that they are proprietary.

Because wow I would love some AGPL'd algorithms to help me filter and organize my media that I can control, modify, toggle on/off, and keep marketers far away from.
