@bthall The cover of that book, Genius Plague, looks awesome. Let me know if you read it and what you think ... I'm neck deep into "In the First Circle" and it's going to be a while before I'm done.
@bthall BTW, sorry for the typos in my original response. I was on my phone and missed some of them, like "God **divides us" and "create **natural safeguards". Hopefully it made sense regardless.
@bthall It's a newer idea to me—I used to think of unification in terms of man against God, but as I get older and see how we treat each other when we have power, well, it seems God isn't the one under threat from our unification. ;)
@bthall That’s quite a read of that text. My theory: God divide us into nations as a way to create nature safeguards to protect us from ourselves. The idea that we can do anything that comes into our hearts when united poses a great threat to humans and is a source of terrible evil. Like, what would the world look like under global communism? No thanks. So, nationalism is a check against all under the boot of human wickedness.
I’m with you. Paper over electronic books any day for me. There’s a spatial aspect to reading a paper artifact that helps my mind order the content, the story, and the author’s logic. Reading a kindle is easy, but the content is disembodied and it becomes that much more abstracted. It’s fine for a throw-away thriller but useless for deeper thought. At least, that’s my experience.
